Woodlin vs. Lone Star Thoughts

Final: Woodlin 74 Lone Star 0

6-man football is a game of unlimited offense...unless it isn't...

Sure, Woodlin put 74 points on the scoreboard, but don't let that number mislead you. The Mustang offense only scored 4 touchdowns, and totaled a paltry 126 yards after penalties.

Blame the Woodlin defense and special teams.

Woodlin forced 5 turnovers (4 fumbles, and an interception) and scored 4 touchdowns and a safety in the game. Woodlin actually put the ball in the end zone after each turnover, but an interception return for a score was called back due to penalty. The Mustangs returned 2 punts and a kick for a score as well.

Offensively Woodlin ran roughly 9 plays (total may be off, I will be honest, I didn't count any of the kneel downs Woodlin had, so the number is probably closer to 14 or 15). At one point the Mustangs had run 5 offense plays, and all 5 ended with the ball in the end zone with one touchdown being called back due to penalty.

Given the lopsided nature of the game, it is hard to judge either team...but here goes:

Woodlin: pretty good speed. Brayan Mosso and Zach Vick are a nice offensive punch with pull-away wheels. Jonathan Roesch is only a sophomore but has nice speed as well. The Mustangs put good pressure on the qb, and swarm well to the ball. The team isn't exceptionally deep, and there is a bit of a drop off when subs come in.

Lone Star: Talk about a hard-luck program. The Longhorns came into the season with 12 on the roster, but as of Friday had 2 players done for the year with broken legs. Another player was out with a concussion, and there were some eligibility issues. From an initial 12, Lone Star only suited up 7 on Friday. The last thing Lone Star wanted was an injury, and unfortunately they sustained one, with Austin Smith leaving the game after a hard hit defensively and not returning. The Longhorns are young but have some decent athletes. You could tell the inexperience though, and the team struggles offensively (I had them for -61 yards...no that isn't a mistype).

Next week: Brush vs. Platte Valley
