FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 10, 2012
April 10, 2012
On
March 22, 2012 the Federal Communications Commission granted the Colorado
Broadcasters Association and National Weather Service a waiver to conduct a
statewide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS). This test will utilize a
'live' Event Code ("TOR") to perform a “statewide tornado test” on Tuesday, April 17, 2012
between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. The test is part of "Severe Weather Awareness Week",
April 15th-22nd.
In
compliance with the FCC’s waiver, the Colorado Broadcasters Association endorses
the judgment of the National Weather Service (NWS) that such a test is
necessary, including valid concerns that “without the live codes, the ‘test’
information would not be relayed through law enforcement communication, thus
weakening a test of warning dissemination;" The test wording will inform the
public that the drill is a test so as not to alarm the public and cause
unnecessary public concern.
For
questions or details regarding the test, please contact Justin Sasso at Justin@ColoradoBroadcasters.org.
