ATWOOD,
COLORADO- A warrant
has been issued for the arrest of Joseph Robert Bernal (DOB: 07/06/1987) of
Greeley for attempted first degree murder for his alleged connection to the
shooting of two men at an Atwood Sinclair gas station on Sunday, August 12,
2012.
Investigators with the Logan County
Sheriff’s office and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) believe Bernal
may have been involved in the shooting.
Bernal may
be traveling in a white, 1991 Mercury Tracer, with Colorado license plate
804-XFV. Anyone with information about the suspect is urged to call Metro
Denver CrimeStoppers with information 720-913-STOP (7867). You may remain anonymous. Bernal is
considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached by citizens.
Overview
of Initial Incident:
The Logan
County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of shots fired at the Sinclair
Station located on Highway 63 and I-76 in Atwood just after 12:30 a.m. on
Sunday, August 12, 2012.
Upon the
arrival of deputies, two Hispanic males were located with multiple gunshot
wounds. The shooting victims were identified as Jared Sanchez (DOB 8/31/87) and
Eric Morales (DOB 11/4/81).
Both Sanchez
and Morales were transported to the Sterling Regional Medical Center for
treatment. Morales received treatment at the medical center; his condition is
unknown at this time. Sanchez was initially treated at the medical center and
was later airlifted to a Denver-area hospital; his condition is also unknown at
this time.
Early into
the investigation, the Logan County Sheriff’s Office contacted the Colorado
Bureau of Investigation and 13th Judicial District Attorney’s Office
for a joint investigation into the shooting.
The initial
investigation indicates this incident was not a result of an attempted robbery
of employees of the gas station, and the victims in the case are not employees
of the Sinclair Station. However, specific details about what led to the
shooting or the relationship between the suspect(s) victims is being
investigated at this time.
Two women
have been arrested in connection with the shooting:
- Leticia Hernandez (DOB 4/18/85)
of Greeley was arrested and faces
charges of conspiracy of first degree assault, conspiracy of aggravated robbery
and attempted first degree homicide. Hernandez is being held at the Logan County
Detention Center on $500,000 bond.
- Monica Pena (DOB 10/1/83) of
Evans, was arrested and faces charges
of conspiracy of first degree assault, conspiracy of aggravated robbery and
attempted first degree homicide. Hernandez is being held at the Logan County
Detention Center on $1,000,000 bond.
The investigation is on-going.
