On June 19, 2010 the Sterling Emergency Communication Center received a 911 call from the pay phone at the 7-11 store located at 311 west Main Street in Sterling. The caller advised there was an explosive device on Front Street in Sterling.
The Sterling Police Department responded to the area of Front Street and conducted a search for suspicious items. During the search, an officer located a suspicious device in a City of Sterling trash receptacle located in the 100 block of North Front Street. The surrounding area was evacuated and area streets were closed.
Due to the circumstances, the Greeley Bomb Squad was notified and responded to the scene. After further investigation, the suspicious device was determined not to be explosive. At approximately 6:30pm, the area was re-opened.
A description of a person of interest was obtained by officers. This person was seen in the immediate area of the pay phone at the time the call was made, and is described as a white male in his mid to late 40's, approximately 6'02" tall with a slender build. The man was possibly wearing a tan baseball style hat and shirt.
