Update in Sterling Wal-Mart Pharmacy Robbery Investigation

The Sterling Police Department continues to aggressively investigate Tuesday’s armed robbery of the Wal-Mart Pharmacy. Early on in the investigation, the Sterling Police Department began working with other law enforcement agencies that have had recent similar incidents in their jurisdictions. The suspect is currently being investigated in connection to robberies of pharmacies in Scottsbluff and Alliance, Nebraska.  

If you observe or know the location of the suspect, please contact the Sterling Police Department or your local law enforcement agency immediately and do not attempt to make contact. Anyone with information on the armed robbery is encouraged to call the Sterling Police Department at 970-522-3512 or Logan County Crime Stoppers at 970-522-EYES (3937).

Arrest Made in Sterling Business Burglaries

Between the early morning hours of September 26, 2014 and the early morning hours of October 13, 2014, burglaries at the following local businesses were reported to the Sterling Police Department: Cocina Alvarado Restaurant, Henry’s Pub and Club, J & L Café, The Tan Zone and Body by M.E.

Throughout the investigation, which included obtaining and executing search warrants, evidence was collected and stolen property was recovered. In addition, an illegal weapon was seized.

On October 22, 2014, an arrest warrant was obtained in connection with these cases for Pierre Hightower, 35 years of age who is a resident of Sterling.

Mr. Hightower was arrested on October 22, 2014 and is currently being held in the Logan County Jail on the following charges:

• Second Degree Burglary (4 counts), a class 4 Felony
• Third Degree Burglary (5 counts), a class 5 Felony
• Possession of Burglary Tools, a class 5 Felony
• Theft , a class 6 Felony
• Criminal Mischief (4 counts) , a class 6 Felony
• First Degree Criminal Tampering (4 counts), a class 1 Misdemeanor
• Possession of an Illegal Weapon, a class 1 Misdemeanor
• Obstruction of Telephone Service, a class 1 Misdemeanor

Cheyenne VA Director to hold town hall meeting in Sterling

Cheyenne Veterans Affairs Medical Center Director, Dr. Cynthia McCormack will hold hold a Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, September 16 starting at 1:30pm. The town hall meeting will provide an open forum to all veterans, their families, and the community to voice their opinions and concerns regarding the Sterling Community Based Outpatient Clinic. The meeting will take place in the Tennant Art Gallery at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling.

Update to Sterling Stabbing

UPDATE

On September 3, 2014, the Sterling Police Department began an investigation into a stabbing incident that occurred at 422 Chestnut Street in Sterling, Colorado.

The individuals involved were:

• Frederick Granillo, Age 52, of Sterling
• Marie Granillo, Age 48, of Sterling

Mr. and Mrs. Granillo are married but did not reside together; the incident occurred in Ms. Granillo’s home.

Mrs. Granillo had multiple stab wounds and Mr. Granillo had multiple self-inflicted stab wounds. Both were initially treated at Sterling Regional MedCenter and then flown to a Denver hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Marie Granillo continues to receive medical care in Denver, Colorado.

Frederick Granillo died on September 9, 2014, in Denver, Colorado.

Prince of Peace Episcopal Church Chili Lunch September 20 in Sterling

Prince of Peace Episcopal Church will be holding a Chili Lunch Saturday, September 20 from 11am-2pm at South 2nd Ave. and Phelps in Sterling. Suggested donation is $7 and the menu includes chili, cinnamon roll, carrot sticks, and drink. Sterling Regional MedCenter Diabetes Self Management Program Starts September 11

A diabetes self-management program will be offered by Wellness Services of Sterling Regional MedCenter starting on Thursday, September 11 at 6:30pm. The 5 week-program will teach participants a number of components including diet, exercise, monitoring glucose levels, managing stress, and in some case medication management. Sterling Regional MedCenter CT Heart Score Appointments Available September 12

CT Heart Score provides CT cardiac scoring, a noninvasive test that accurately measures the amount of calcified plaque in the arteries. Cost of Heart Score including a wellness consultation is $199 The optional blood tests available with CT scan include  lipid profile for $25, a high sensitive C-reactive protein for $15, and/or a homocysteine for $30. Sterling Regional MedCenter Body Check September 11

Sterling Regional MedCenter's Medical Imaging, Cardiopulmonary, and Wellness Services departments have teamed up to offer a new screening program that includes: blood work, sleep questionnaire, lung function test, body composition, weight, and body mass index, hip to waist ratio, EKG, bone density screening (women only), PSA blood test (men only), peripheral arterial disease screening, evaluation of leg circulation, ultrasound of the carotid vessels, ultrasound of the aorta, health education with a wellness specialist, and health information packet. Cost is $175. The Peripheral Arterial Disease screening is available with a Lipid Profile Panel for $100. The next screening date is Thursday, September 11 from 8-11am. Body Sculpting and Toning Class Starts September 8 in Sterling

The Sterling Regional MedCenter Wellness Services Department will be offering a Body Sculpting and Toning Class. The class is intended for all ages. Classes will be held twice a week on Mondays and Wednesday from 5:15-6pm at Ayres Elementary in Sterling starting September 8. Cost is $5 per session. Sterling Regional MedCenter Quarterly Blood Screenings

Sterling Regional MedCenter will be offering Lipid Profile + Gluclose screenings for $25. In addition several other heart related blood screenings will be offered. The screenings will be held at Christ United Methodist Church, 4th and Main in downtown Sterling, from 7-9am on Tuesday, September 2 and Wednesday, September 3 (please use the west entrance). A 12-hour fast is required for the lipid screening and chemistry panel only. No appointment is necessary. Reading Action Program Fundraiser August 18

The 2nd Annual Reading Action Program Salad Luncheon Fundraiser, hosted by the Sterling Lions Club and the Reading in Action Program Committee, will be held Monday, August 18 from 11am-1:30pm at the Sterling High School cafeteria, 407 West Broadway in Sterling. City of Sterling to Host NFL Punt, Pass, & Kick Competition August 16

Young Denver Broncos fans will have the opportunity to exhibit their football skills when the City of Sterling Recreation Division hosts the free NFL Football and NFL Play 60...Punt, Pass & Kick event on Saturday, August 16th, 2014.

NFL Punt, Pass & Kick is a football competition that allows youngsters to showcase their talents in punting, passing and placekicking with scores based on distance and accuracy.

The free competition is open to boys and girls ages 6-15. Age classification is as of December 31, 2014.

Registration begins at 3:30 on Tiger Field at Sterling High School. The competition will start at 4:00 p.m. Individuals can register online atwww.nflppk.com or pick up a registration form from the Sterling Recreation Center or Pro Sports at Tiger Field on the day of the competition.

No football shoes/cleats/turf shoes are allowed. Only gym shoes (soft sole) will be permitted.

This competition will kick off the Sterling High School football season. They will be hosting a scrimmage “Gatorade Game.” A bottle of Gatorade will be the admission price to the high school game. Those participating in the PPK event will get in to the game free. Pre-game warm-ups will begin at 6:00 p.m. And kick-off is at 7:00 p.m.

The top finishers from each of the five age groups at the Sterling competition will advance to a Sectional competition. Winners at the Sectional competition will have their scores compared with other Sectional champions throughout Colorado with the top five scorers in each age group advancing to the Denver Broncos Team Championship.

Broncos Team Champions will have their scores compared to other Team Champions from around the NFL. The top four scorers in each age group will advance to the National Finals at the AFC Playoff Game.

City of Sterling Kickball League Registration Underway

The City of Sterling Department of Parks, Library, and Recreation is currently accepting team registrations for new fun and recreational, Teen/Adult Kickball Leagues. All participants must be at least 14 years old before participating. An 8 game season will begin August 26 and games will be scheduled on Tuesday evenings at the Pioneer Park softball fields.

Entry Fee

$50 per team, make checks payable to the City of Sterling and must be paid in full before a team is considered entered into a league. Entries are due Monday, August 20.

Open Co-Rec is offered consisting of a 10 person team. Teams must have an equal ration of women to men and teams can play with as few as 6 players.

Officials

Teams will officiate their own games. The Field Supervisor will make the final decision if teams cannot agree.
