Wellness Services at Sterling Regional MedCenter will be offering a Metabolism Screening on Monday, September 15 starting at 7am. The 30-minute screening will measure your oxygen consumption and help you determine a personalized calorie budget. Cost is $30. To make your appointment call 521-3260.

Sterling Regional MedCenter Diabetes Self Management Program Starts September 11

A diabetes self-management program will be offered by Wellness Services of Sterling Regional MedCenter starting on Thursday, September 11 at 6:30pm. The 5 week-program will teach participants a number of components including diet, exercise, monitoring glucose levels, managing stress, and in some case medication management. Sterling Regional MedCenter CT Heart Score Appointments Available September 12

CT Heart Score provides CT cardiac scoring, a noninvasive test that accurately measures the amount of calcified plaque in the arteries. Cost of Heart Score including a wellness consultation is $199 The optional blood tests available with CT scan include  lipid profile for $25, a high sensitive C-reactive protein for $15, and/or a homocysteine for $30. Sterling Regional MedCenter Body Check September 11

Sterling Regional MedCenter's Medical Imaging, Cardiopulmonary, and Wellness Services departments have teamed up to offer a new screening program that includes: blood work, sleep questionnaire, lung function test, body composition, weight, and body mass index, hip to waist ratio, EKG, bone density screening (women only), PSA blood test (men only), peripheral arterial disease screening, evaluation of leg circulation, ultrasound of the carotid vessels, ultrasound of the aorta, health education with a wellness specialist, and health information packet. Cost is $175. The Peripheral Arterial Disease screening is available with a Lipid Profile Panel for $100. The next screening date is Thursday, September 11 from 8-11am. Body Sculpting and Toning Class Starts September 8 in Sterling

The Sterling Regional MedCenter Wellness Services Department will be offering a Body Sculpting and Toning Class. The class is intended for all ages. Classes will be held twice a week on Mondays and Wednesday from 5:15-6pm at Ayres Elementary in Sterling starting September 8. Cost is $5 per session. Sterling Regional MedCenter Quarterly Blood Screenings

Sterling Regional MedCenter will be offering Lipid Profile + Gluclose screenings for $25. In addition several other heart related blood screenings will be offered. The screenings will be held at Christ United Methodist Church, 4th and Main in downtown Sterling, from 7-9am on Tuesday, September 2 and Wednesday, September 3 (please use the west entrance). A 12-hour fast is required for the lipid screening and chemistry panel only. No appointment is necessary. LGBT Northeast Colorado to hold Health Insurance Presentation Nov 8 In Sterling

The Center in Denver and LGBT Northeast Colorado are teaming up to bring information to Northeastern Colorado about health care insurance on Friday, November 8th. The free presentation will help individuals who haven't been eligible or could not afford health care in the past to find options for their health care needs through the new Connect for Health Colorado insurance marketplace. The Wray Community Health Fair announces blood draw dates.  Dates at the Wray Hospital are weekdays thru October 25 from 6-9am.  Those getting blood drawn are instructed to fast for 12 hours (but drink plenty of water), and you may take normal medications prior to test.  Cost is $30 for chem panel (glucose, blood count, electrolytes, thyroid & more), or $15 for PSA (prostate blood test for men).  To make an appointment call 970-332-4811.  The Wray Community Health Fair will be held October 30 at the WRAC in Wray from 5:30-6:30pm.  For questions call 970-332-2245.

MCC Open House for Career and Technical Education and Health Science Technology Programs October 23

Morgan Community College (MCC) announces an open house for career and technical education (CTE) and the health science technology (HST) programs on Wednesday, October 23 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Fort Morgan campus.

Students interested in careers in Business & Applied Technologies are invited to meet with instructors from automotive service technology and collision repair, business and accounting, agriculture management, real estate, multimedia, and welding. Find out about course requirements, career options, and job placement opportunities.

The Health Science Technology program is designed for juniors and seniors in high school who want to explore health science careers. Students taking classes at MCC, earn college credit while still in high school. Students completing this program will be qualified to work as an entry level health care or support worker. Meet instructors; find out more about the courses offered as well as how to enroll during the open house.

Participants do not need to register to attend, and are asked to begin at Student Services. Pizza will be served from 5 to 6 p.m.

NJC students do well at State HOSA Conference

LOVELAND (March 9, 2013) – Over 400 secondary and post-secondary students interested in health care careers attended the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) State Leadership Conference from March 7-9, 2013 at the Embassy Suites Loveland Hotel and Conference Center.  Students attended general sessions, Educational Symposiums and competed in over 40 different Competitive Events.

Twenty students from Northeastern Junior College’s  HOSA attended the State Leadership Conference. Including some that are in the high school secondary level of HOSA and some that are now in the collegiate post-secondary level.  Those attending from NJC included: postsecondary student  Kelsey Hummel and secondary students Amanda Rogers (State Officer-Vice President of Communication and Local Chapter President), Tarah Bennett, Krissa Baseggio, Alexis Blagg, Katie Buchleiter, Bianca DeMaria, Brittany Harris, Ashley Helvie, Kelsey Hodges, Zach Kellogg, Lauren Montoya, Jamecia Nygaard, Tabby Rangel, Amanda Ramirez, Ashley Reeves, Hannah Schreyer, Desiree Sharples, Jamie Sheldon, and Megan Zimmerman.

Amanda Rogers completed her year as a state officer. She was on the state officer team that organized this state conference and competition, doing to planning, organizing and managing of the various activities. She also was chosen as the recipient for the HOSA State Scholarship.

The remaining students participated in various competitive events and other conference activities in several categories including health science events, leadership events, and teamwork events.

Winners of competitive events are as follows: Health Science Events (which are Knowledge Tests):  Dental Terminology-3^rd place-Alexis Blagg;  Amanda Ramirez a top 10 finalist;  Nutrition Test-top 10 finalist-Katie Buchleiter;  Growth and Development Test-3^rd place-Ashley Reeves; Emergency Preparedness Events:  Epidemiology-1^st place-Kelsey Hummel- Health Profession Events (performance of skills):  Sports Medicine-top 10 finalist-Katie Buchleiter; Veterinary Medicine-3^rd place-Hannah Schreyer;  Dental Science-3^rd place-Alexis Blagg.

In the Leadership Events competitions, Sterling students did well including:  Extemporaneous Writing- top 10 finalists-Lauren Montoya, Tabby Rangel, Desiree Sharples and Megan Zimmerman; Extemporaneous Poster-2^nd place-Katie Buchleiter; Job Seeking Skills-1^st place-Kelsey Hummel; 2^nd place- Kelsey Hodges.

Teamwork Events winners included: Career Health Display-top 10 finalist team-Megan Zimmerman/Hannah Schreyer; Pace Setter Awards went to Kelsey Hummel, Ashley Helvie, Amanda Rogers, and Jamecia Nygaard for being exemplary HOSA chapter members. An Outstanding HOSA Chapter recognition award was presented to Bianca DeMaria for the scrapbook competition..

Those students placing first, second or third in their respective events are qualified to compete at the National HOSA Leadership Conference June 26-29, 2013 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Accompanying the students to the State Conference were chaperone Nicole Pollart and HOSA Advisor, Joleen Rinaldo. Rinaldo was also honored for her outstanding years of service and leadership to the students of Colorado HOSA. Rinaldo is retiring this year.

“These students are truly the face of future health care professionals.  They competed in activities that showcased not only their health care knowledge, but their leadership skills,” said Jen Staley-Girvin, Colorado HOSA State Advisor. “Congratulations to the students and their teachers for their hard work and preparation.”
