Kids College offers Cooking 101 class in late June

Just after a hugely successful showcase of Italian-based cuisine offered during the 2013 Hope Gala, chefs Calvin Lee and Ryan Virgil are coming back to the kitchen this summer to offer a Cooking 101 class as part of the 2013 Kids College offering at Northeastern Junior College. Lee and Virgil are both cooking experts who oversee the food service at the college through Sodexo, Inc.
Students who will be entering grades 5, 6 and 7 this fall, can learn to make a whole meal for the family during this class which will take place Monday June 24 thru Wednesday June 26, each afternoon from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Cost of the class is $40 per student. Students will be eating what they prepare in class. Those who want to attend must register by Thursday, June 20th. Call 521-6900 to reserve your child’s spot in the kitchen on campus.
“We’ll show the students how to make some fun veggie shapes to help make their meals more creative,” notes Virgil, who has children this same age at home. “To top off the meal, we will show the kids various ways to fold napkins as one more way to get them excited about preparing meals,” Virgil concluded.

Wray Recreation Department Kids in the Kitchen Program starts June 13

The Wray Recreation Department will be starting Kids in the Kitchen on Thursday, June 13. Kids in the Kitchen is a five-week course and is held every Thursday through July 18.. It is an informational program based on kids learning the importance of kitchen safety, how to cook and use utensils. There will be two sessions for two different age groups. Kindergarten through second grade will be held from 9:00 to 10:15 am and third through fifth grade will be held from 10:45 to 12 noon. It will be held at the Wray Round House and the cost is $35, which includes a cookbook and an apron. The instructor for the course is Bethany Roth. Jackson Lake State Park is Calling All Chefs for a Dutch Oven & Chili Cook-Off

ORCHARD, Colo. – Jackson Lake State Park’s inaugural Dutch Oven & Chili Cook-Off will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Men, women, and youngsters who want to have fun, enjoy good food, and share their enthusiasm for chili and Dutch oven cooking are invited to enter the contest and enjoy the lake’s recreational opportunities.
Cook-off categories include: Main Dish (meat), Side Dish (vegetable), Breads, Desserts, Wild Game/Fish, Chili and Youth Chefs (any dish prepared by a chef under 16 years old.) There will also be a Cowboy Coffee category to participate in. The Cowboy Coffee will be a “People’s Choice Award,” and judging will start in the morning and end around 11 a.m.
The winners will be announced after all judging is complete. The judges will select the top three contestants in all categories and prizes will be awarded. Spectators will be able to taste all dishes after the judging is complete.
The event is free, but all vehicles entering the park must display an annual pass or purchase a $7 daily pass.

Bonny Lake State Park is hosting their Fourth Annual Dutch Oven & Chili Cook-off on Saturday, June 18, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Participants who want to have fun, enjoy good food and share their enthusiasm for chili and Dutch oven cooking are invited to enter the contest or just come to dine.
Cook-off categories include: Main Dish (meat), Side Dish (vegetable), Breads, Dessert, Wild Game/Fish, Chili, and Youth Chefs (any dish prepared by a chef under 16 years old).
