RE-1 Valley Schools Celebrates School Board Recognition Month

January is School Board Recognition Month and the RE-1 Valley School District is joining other districts across the state to gratefully acknowledge the invaluable contributions local school board members make to their communities.

Volunteer school board members serve countless hours working to improve public education. In difficult times, school boards develop policies and make tough decisions on complex educational and social issues that affect the entire community and the lives of individual students. They bear responsibility in RE-1 Valley School District for an annual budget of $20,450,391; approximately 2300 students; 500 employees; and seven school buildings.

School Board members have a tremendous responsibility, preparing today’s students and tomorrow’s leaders, for productive roles in our society. School board members are the voice of their communities, serving first and foremost in the best interest of our schoolchildren.

We proudly join educators and community members in saluting these education advocates as they provide leadership for student achievement, academic programs, district funding, and school facilities. Their service ensures that decisions about local public schools are made by those most familiar with the needs of the community’s children and families. These individuals deserve recognition and thanks for their commitment and dedication to the continuing success of our students and schools.

RE-1 Valley Schools Board of Education meets November 18

RE-1 Valley Schools Board of Education Announce Next Board Meetings

The next regular meeting of the RE-1 Valley Schools Board of Education will be Monday, July 15 beginning at 6pm in the Board Room at the Hagen Administration Center.  The Board will also hold a Workshop on Tuesday, July 16 beginning at 4pm in the Tennant Art Gallery at Northeastern Junior College.

RE-1 Valley Board of Education Approves Superintendent Contract

At their May 20th meeting, the RE-1 Valley Board of Education approved the contract of Dr. Jan DeLay as Superintendent of Schools effective July 1, 2013.

Eric Windom, president of the RE-1 Valley Board of Education stated, “We are looking forward to working with Dr. DeLay and continuing to move forward in providing the best education possible for all RE-1 students.”

RE-1 Valley School District Makes Selection For Superintendent

At the April 30th special meeting of the RE-1 Valley Board of Education, the Board announced in a resolution the selection of Jan DeLay as Superintendent of Schools. Dr. DeLay, selected from the pool of 17 applicants and four finalists for the position, will enter into contract negotiations with the District’s legal representation.

The Board of Education and two interview committees met with the four finalists on Saturday, April 27, for the day long interview process. Spokesmen for the interview committees shared the strengths and concerns for each candidate, but ultimately, responsibility for the decision rests with the Board of Education to employ their one employee, the Superintendent of Schools. Just minutes prior to the beginning of the special meeting Tuesday evening, the Board received word that one candidate, Mathew Neal of Edgewater, Colorado, had withdrawn his application after accepting a position in Rock Springs, Wyoming, leaving three candidates for the Board’s consideration.

Eric Windom, president of the RE-1 Valley Board of Education stated, “The Board has made this decision after a great deal of thought and consideration for what is best for the students and staff in our District.”

RE-1 Valley Board of Education To Host Meet & Greet for Superintendent Candidates April 26

The RE-1 Valley Board of Education will host a “meet & greet” for the four candidates selected as finalists for the position of Superintendent of Schools. Community, staff and students are invited to meet the candidates in an informal setting on Friday, April 26 beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the lobby at Sterling Middle School.

The candidates will be traveling to Sterling from various locations across Colorado. Jan Delay, of Longmont, Matthew Neal, of Edgewater, Ron Pflug, of Fort Morgan, and Matthew Snyder, of Lamar, will spend Friday afternoon touring District schools before participating in the Friday evening event. Interviews by two interview teams and the Board of Education will take place on April 27. It will be a busy day and a half for the four candidates. The Board of Education will hold a Special Meeting on Tuesday, April 30, to decide on the finalist for the Superintendent of Schools.

RE-1 VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT TO HONOR RETIRING SUPERINTENDENT

The RE-1 Valley Board of Education and staff are inviting the RE-1 Valley community to an open house to honor superintendent Dr. Betty Summers as she retires from ten years of service to the District and almost 40 years as an educator. The open house will be held on Monday, April 29, 2013, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Room 230 of the Hays Student Center at Northeastern Junior College.

Dr. Betty (Elizabeth) Summers has served the RE-1 Valley School District as Superintendent of Schools since 2003. She has worked with the Board of Education, staff, and community to continue to improve student achievement and to ensure that school facilities provide a learning environment that supports 21st century skills and technology.

Dr. Summers said of her decision to retire, “It’s time for family.” Please join the District in wishing Dr. Summers farewell and best wishes!

RE-1 VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT SEEKING INTERVIEW PARTICIPANTS

The RE-1 Valley School District is seeking volunteers to participate in the interviews of finalists for the superintendent of schools position. Those who wish to participate must have the following times available:

• Tuesday, April 16, 2013, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for a mandatory training session – participants must attend training to be included in the Interview Committee
• Saturday, April 27, 2013, for one full day for the interviews. Sessions lasting 1½ hours will be conducted for each interviewee. At the end of each interview, committees will complete a form listing candidate’s strengths and any concerns. This will be presented to the Board of Education for its consideration.

INTERVIEW COMMITTEES

Committees will be selected by the Board, each committee consisting of 8-12 people. The Board will select individuals to assure the committees represent K-12 education as well as a cross-section of the community. Participants will be notified on April 16 via email. Individuals not selected will also be notified. Those who would like to be considered must complete an application form and return it by 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 12. The application form may be found on the District’s website at www.re1valleyschools.org.
