RE-1 Valley Schools Board of Education meets November 18

The RE-1 Valley Schools Board of Education will hold a regular meeting on Monday, November 18 beginning at 6pm in the Board Room of the Hagen Administration Center.  Newly elected Board members will take the Oath of Office at this meeting.

Sterling Police Department Update on Arrest Related To Sterling High School Threat

On Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, at approximately 10:00 p.m. the Sterling Police Department received a report that there could be a potential shooting on Nov. 7th at Sterling High School.  The Sterling Police Department and other agencies provided intervention and the reported individual of concern presented no immediate danger to school or students.

Additional information discovered after school hours on November 7, 2013 initiated additional interviews and investigation which continued throughout the day on Nov. 7th and into the early hours of the morning on Nov 8th.  As a result two juvenile males were arrested and taken to Platte Valley Youth Detention Facility in Greeley late last night. Due to threats directed towards the school, they have been charged with:

• Interference With Staff, Faculty or Students of Educational Institutions. 

Assessment and investigation of the situation indicated at no time was the school in any immediate danger. It was also determined that neither of the individuals had means to carry out their threatening comments.

We continue to remain confident that the students and staff at Sterling High School are safe at this time and we will continue our efforts to ensure that remains so. We are working very closely with Sterling High School and other appropriate agencies.  We remain diligent as the investigation continues.

We have additional information to share with you. It is important to us to provide the most accurate and timely information as possible to families so that they can share information with their children as they see fit.

Student behavior related to this incident had been closely monitored over the last two weeks. The school immediately involved the Sterling Police Department as soon as we learned there was a potential threat to others.

We continue to remain confident that the students and staff at all RE-1 Valley Schools are safe at this time and we will continue our efforts to ensure that remains so. We are working very closely with the Police Department and other appropriate agencies related to this issue.

The school has a plan in place for care and recovery to support students with any ongoing needs related to this issue. Students are encouraged to visit with counselors. This is a serious concern and student safety is our utmost priority. The most supportive response to children is to assure them that the police and the school are confident in their safety and there is no ongoing threat. Haxtun Schools Parent/Teacher Conference Schedule Change

The Haxtun Schools parent/teacher conferences and teacher in-service dates that were originally scheduled for October 17th & 18th have been moved to October 24th & 25th. Parent/teacher conferences for the elementary and junior high are scheduled for October 24th. You should be receiving a letter in the mail with your appointment time. Contact Cindy at 774-6161 if schedule time(s) will NOT work for you. Conferences in the high school should be scheduled through your child and their homeroom teacher. Please talk with your child about times when you are available. These conferences are student led and should be completed by October 25th.

Akron HS Government Class Community School Board Forum Oct 7

The Akron High School Government Class would like to invite you to a Community School Board Forum. This event will take place October 7 from 7-9 in the Akron High School cafeteria. Refreshments will be provided.

ACT test rescheduled for October 12 at NJC

The ACT test originally scheduled to be administered at Northeastern Junior College on September  21^st has been rescheduled for Saturday, October 12^th, same time and location.  ACT will be contacting students who were registered for the test via email to make them aware of this new date. Only students who were assigned to the test center on the original test date will be on the roster for the rescheduled test date. Students planning to test must bring their September paper ticket with photo and acceptable photo ID to the test center for admission on this rescheduled test day. Payment for the September 21^st test will be applied to the October 12^th test.

Anyone with questions regarding the Oct. 12^th test date may contact Andrea Schumacher at Northeastern Junior College at 521-6663. Schumacher proctors the test locally on behalf of ACT.

The ACT Test (formerly referred to as the American College Test), is a college readiness assessment tool, is a curriculum and standards-based educational and career planning tool that evaluates a students' academic readiness for college.

Encore Life in Wray homework house location change

Homework House, hosted by Encore Life, meets Monday-Wednesday from 3:30-5 in the afternoon.  There has been a location change!   It will now be held at the 55 & Over Club at 741 West 7th Street, beginning October 1st.  Until that time, Homework House will still be held at the Buchanan Middle School Library. 

Sherman School in Fort Morgan has Kindecare and After School Openings

Prairie School Registration at Overland Trail Museum in Sterling May 11

Prairie School registration will be held at the Overland Trail Museum in Sterling on Saturday, May 11 from 9am-12pm.  Dates for Prairie School are determined by the volunteer teachers, and will be posted the date of registration.  Prairie School is recommended for children who have finished kindergarten.  Registration must be done in person.  For more information call 522-3895.

Safe Schools for LGBT Youth April 12 at Family Resource Center in Sterling

Farmers support Logan County through America’s Farmers Grow Communities

Drought-stricken farmers and rural communities receive double funding

MERINO, Colo. (April  4, 2013) –Buffalo School District Re-4J and Merino High School FFA will now be able to better serve the community, thanks to the support of local farmer, Charles Barlett, and America’s Farmers Grow Communities.

Sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, the philanthropic arm of Monsanto Company, Grow Communities provides farmers in eligible counties the chance to win a $2,500 donation for a local nonprofit organization of their choice. To further support counties declared natural disaster areas by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) due to the drought this year, winning farmers in these counties are able to direct double donations, a total of $5,000.

Logan County was declared a disaster area by the USDA, giving Barlett the opportunity to choose two organizations to receive $2,500 donations. Barlett selected Buffalo School District Re-4J  and Merino High School FFA. Buffalo School District Re-4J will use the funds to improve school garden areas.

Merino High School FFA will use the funds to build a greenhouse.

                 “I think it's great that the Monsanto Fund is making strong efforts to support rural communities,” Barlett said.

                This year, the Monsanto Fund will invest nearly $6 million in rural America through Grow Communities, which includes double donations for counties impacted by the historic drought.

In Colorado, $65,000 is being given across 13 counties.

                America’s Farmers Grow Communities is sponsored by the Monsanto Fund to partner with farmers in helping them positively impact their communities. This program is part of the Monsanto Fund’s overall effort to strengthen rural America.

Sterling High School Parent Teacher Conferences October 29 and November 1

Sterling High School will hold their Parent/Teacher Conferences on Monday, October 29, and Thursday, November 1.  Conference time for Monday, October 29 will be 5:30-8:15pm.  On Thursday night, November 1, conference time will be from 5:30-8:30pm.  Teachers will be located in their classrooms.  Parents are asked to limit their conferences to five minutes.  Student guides and interpreters will be available during the conference to assist parents.  Please enter at the main entrance of the school.

Sterling High School Back To School Night August 27

Sterling High School would like to invite parents and students to their Back To School Night on August 27 from 6-8pm. Parents and students will be able to visit with teachers and organization sponsors, view classrooms, and take care of fees/fines in the office.
