The Sterling Police Department invites everyone to attend our first annual Community Appreciation and Support Day. This special event is to thank our hard working, generous citizens for what you do for our community and for your continued support. The Sterling Police Department proudly supports this great community and continues to be a partner in enhancing the quality of life for all who live and visit Sterling.

WHERE: Pioneer Park Security Pavilion Area

ACTIVITIES: 1. Patrol vehicles and other equipment will be on
display for viewing and demonstration
2. Child ID Kits (please bring your children and get an
all important Child ID kit done for your child)
3. SPD Explorers will be present to help out and provide
information on our Explorer Post
4. Bike registrations (Ride or bring your bike to the park
and we will register it for you)
5. Neighborhood Watch information will be provided
6. Meet and greet with SPD officers, Chief of Police and
other team members
7. K-9 Presentation. We will conclude with the K-9
presentation where you can watch "Glock" and his
handler put on demonstrations while learning how
our K-9 team enhances public safety and our public
relation efforts.
8. Light Refreshments will be served

Sterling Police Department Finds Dead Male, Seeking Help Locating Wife

On May 29, 2014, at approximately 1:00 PM, officers of the Sterling Police Department responded to a medical call at 409 S. 3rd Avenue.  Upon arrival, officers located a deceased male, identified as 70 year old Charles Roger Severance, who is a resident of the home.  

During the subsequent investigation, officers were unable to locate Shirley Anne Severance, the deceased male’s spouse, who also resides at the residence.

The Sterling Police Department with the assistance of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, Logan County Coroner’s Office and the 13th Judicial District Attorney’s Office are currently conducting an extensive investigation into the cause of death of Charles Severance and the whereabouts of Shirley Severance. Mrs. Severance is 70 years of age, 5’00” tall, 140 lbs with brown hair and brown eyes and needs to be located to check her welfare and for questioning.  

An autopsy on Mr. Severance was scheduled for today, May 30, 2014.

Current assessment of the investigation and evidence does not indicate any overt threats or public safety concerns.

Sterling Police Looking For Male Subject

On April 18, 2014 at about 2:30 p.m., a 13 year-old female was in the wooded area west of the Overland Trail Park (20801 East Highway 6).  While in the woods, she observed a naked man in the area.  The man did not attempt to contact or speak to her.  He is described as a white, 50-60 years-old, heavy set male, with short gray hair.  

Anyone having information regarding whom this male subject is or has recently witnessed a similar event is asked to contact the Sterling Police Department at 970-522-3512 or Crime Stoppers at 970-522-3937(EYES).

Stay in groups when using parks, especially around dawn or dusk, or keep to high-traffic, well-lighted areas

Sterling Police Department Drug Take Back April 26

[Sterling, CO] – On April 26, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Sterling Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.  Bring your pills for disposal to Sterling Police Department located at 421 N. 4th Street Sterling, CO 80751. (The DEA cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps, only pills or patches.)  The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Last October, Americans turned in 324 tons (over 647,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at over 4,114 sites operated by the DEA and its thousands of state and local law enforcement partners.  When those results are combined with what was collected in its seven previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners have taken in over 3.4 million pounds—more than 1,700 tons—of pills.  

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.  Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.  Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.

DEA is in the process of approving new regulations that implement the Safe and Responsible Drug Disposal Act of 2010, which amends the Controlled Substances Act to allow an “ultimate user” (that is, a patient or their family member or pet owner) of controlled substance medications to dispose of them by delivering them to entities authorized by the Attorney General to accept them.  

Blue Santa Event Dec 14 in Sterling

The Logan County Sheriff’s Office and the Sterling Police Department are once again excited to welcome Blue Santa for the fifth annual Blue Santa Event.

The Logan County Sheriff’s Office and the Sterling Police Department have joined forces to make Blue Santa a yearly food drive to help needy families and economically disadvantaged children in our communities. This year’s event for children to meet Blue Santa will be held on Saturday, December 14^th at the old Logan County Courthouse, 315 Main Street Sterling, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

Photographs will be taken of children with Blue Santa, and free cinnamon rolls and cocoa will be available. Members of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and the Sterling Police Department will be present to complete Child ID Kits. Please bring non-perishable food items to be donated to Cooperative Ministries. 

Sterling Police Department welcomes newest officer

The Sterling Police Department welcomed their newest badge holder on Monday morning, December 2, 2013 in City Hall’s Council Chambers at a swearing-in ceremony.  Michael Hart comes to our Sterling community from Parker, Colorado and graduated from Ponderosa High School in 2003.  In 2010 he received his peace officer certification after graduating from the law enforcement training academy at Arapahoe Community College, where he also received his associates degree in 2012.  Michael is currently seeking his bachelor’s degree in public administration/public safety from Colorado Mesa University.

Officer Hart is married and has two children.

Sterling Police Department Investigates Possible Threat At Sterling High School

On November 18, 2013, Sterling High School officials notified the Sterling Police Department that a student had observed the word "bomb" written on the stall of a student bathroom and reported this information to a teacher.

The Sterling Police Department responded immediately and in conjunction with the school assessed the suspicious incident.

During the lunch period, the Wally Post Gymnasium was searched and nothing suspicious was located. After lunch, all students were moved to the Wally Post Gymnasium, while the remainder of the building was searched. Again, nothing suspicious was located.

Other than the word written on the stall, there was no credible information to indicate there was a threat to the school. The searches were conducted out of an abundance of caution for the safety of all students and staff of Sterling High School.

The Sterling Police Department takes its role in protecting life and property, as well as investigating threats to the school, seriously. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Sterling Police Department at (970) 522-3512 or Crime Stoppers at (970) 522-EYES.

Sterling Police Department Update on Arrest Related To Sterling High School Threat

On Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, at approximately 10:00 p.m. the Sterling Police Department received a report that there could be a potential shooting on Nov. 7th at Sterling High School.  The Sterling Police Department and other agencies provided intervention and the reported individual of concern presented no immediate danger to school or students.

Additional information discovered after school hours on November 7, 2013 initiated additional interviews and investigation which continued throughout the day on Nov. 7th and into the early hours of the morning on Nov 8th.  As a result two juvenile males were arrested and taken to Platte Valley Youth Detention Facility in Greeley late last night. Due to threats directed towards the school, they have been charged with:

• Interference With Staff, Faculty or Students of Educational Institutions. 

Assessment and investigation of the situation indicated at no time was the school in any immediate danger. It was also determined that neither of the individuals had means to carry out their threatening comments.

We continue to remain confident that the students and staff at Sterling High School are safe at this time and we will continue our efforts to ensure that remains so. We are working very closely with Sterling High School and other appropriate agencies.  We remain diligent as the investigation continues.

Sterling Police Department release on reported threat at Sterling High School

On Wednesday, Nov. 6 at approximately 10:00 p.m. the Sterling Police Department received a report that there could be a potential shooting on Nov. 7 or 8 at Sterling High School. Upon notification of this threat Sterling Police Department immediately initiated an investigation and began working with school administration. As a result of a detailed and thorough investigation we found the threat was not credible and in fact at this time have no confirmation that a threat ever existed.

As a precautionary measure police were on scene at Sterling High School this morning and will be for the rest of the week to address questions or concerns from students, parents and staff.

"We take any and all threats very seriously, particularly when they involve the safety of our children and community members," said Tyson Kerr, Sterling's interim Police Chief. "We are confident at this time that the staff and students at Sterling High School are safe."

Sterling Police Department makes burglary arrest

On August 10, 2013, at approximately 9:30 AM, Sterling Police Officers investigated a Burglary at 502 S. Division Avenue in Sterling.  During the investigation, officers identified a suspect and determined he was at the residence located next door at 508 S. Division Avenue. The suspect was identified as Sean Pearce, 46 years of age, of Sterling, whom officers also confirmed had a felony warrant for his arrest.

During the attempt to contact Mr. Pearce at 508 S. Division Avenue, he barricaded himself in the attic of the residence. All the occupants of the home were safely removed and only Mr. Pearce remained inside the residence.

Sterling Police made repeated attempts to communicate with Mr. Pearce. Mr. Pearce did not respond or comply with demands to come out of the attic and as a result, Pepper Spray (OC) was introduced into the attic.  Ultimately the suspect complied with orders given by police and was removed through an attic window. Mr. Pearce was subsequently taken into custody without further incident.

Mr. Pearce was arrested on the following charges:
⦁ Second Degree Burglary, a class 4 Felony
⦁ Theft, a class 5 Felony
⦁ Obstructing a Peace Officer, a class 2 Misdemeanor
⦁ Theft by Receiving Warrant
