***Logan County Sheriff's Office Press Release***
Each year when crops have been planted and farmers begin to utilize their irrigation pivots, many find they aren’t working. The cause isn’t a mechanical failure – it’s the absence of copper wiring in the irrigation pivots.
The Logan County Sheriff’s Office is called to investigate copper thefts from irrigation pivots, but by the time the crime is discovered there is little hope of tracking down a culprit. The reason for this is simple: these crimes often occur over the months when irrigation pivots are not being used. Several months can pass before the discovery of the crime and crucial evidence is lost.
Irrigation pivots are not the only thing being targeted. Recently, the Sheriff’s Office received a report of stolen irrigation tubes. Metal thefts have risen drastically in the last few years due to increasing prices being offered for metal and poor economic conditions. Metal isn’t the only thing being targeted, living in such an agricultural community leaves many doors wide open to criminals, allowing the theft of property from vacant homes, fields, machinery, and barns.
The Logan County Sheriff’s Office urges not only farmers, but all of our community members to be vigilant during the winter months. Check your property often to determine if you have been a victim of a crime and report it quickly to the Sheriff’s Office. The sooner the crime is discovered the greater the likely hood of a successful investigation.
