Colorado 1A Basketball Tournament Changes Locations, Still Faces Uncertainty

CHSAA CLASS 1A BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT TO MOVE COLORADO MINES
Tourney Moving From Greeley to Golden as UNC Women Surge in Big Sky Play
***CHSAA PRESS RELEASE***

After discussions with the University of Northern Colorado, the Colorado High School Activities Association has that for planning and practicality purposes for the schools involved in the Class 1A state basketball tournament a change in venue was needed, CHSAA assistant commissioner for basketball Bert Borgmann announced Tuesday. The tournament will move to the Colorado School of Mines in Golden March 10-12, 2011, where the CHSAA holds its 4A and 5A Great 8 tournaments.

The Class 1A State Tournament was originally scheduled UNC’s Butler Hancock Hall but the continuing success of the Bears’ women’s basketball team forced the decision. Should UNC, which is currently alone in first place, win the Big Sky Conference, it is obligated to host the BSC tournament the same days as the 1A schools were slated to play in Greeley.

“While we congratulate the success of the UNC women, it became apparent that waiting for the final two games of the season would not serve our schools well as they plan for the state tournament. For the past two weeks, the Association has been seeking an alternate site while watching the Big Sky standings. The switch to Colorado Mines also has a contingency site attached because of the success of the Mines men’s team,” Borgmann said.

While the plan to move to the Colorado School of Mines is in place, there is still be a contingency that needs to be addressed. The Mines men’s team ranks #2 in the NCAA Division 2 Central Region behind Minnesota State-Mankato. The team ranked #1 generally is selected to host the Regional Tournament. Should Minnesota State stumble and Mines continue its success, it might move into that #1 position and be required to host that tournament.

In that case, the 1A tournament we will move to the University of Colorado with a modified schedule that will begin play on Wednesday, March 9
