Thoughts on CHSAA Moving 1A Tournament

CHSAA needs to fix the high school basketball schedule.  This is the second time in 6 years that the small school championship has been moved.  Not only is it an inconvience to the teams, school, parents, fans, etc., but it is disrespectful to the teams involved.  CHSAA would never allow this to happen to 4A or 5A, so why is it ok for 1A?  These teams put in the same work, and a championship means the same when they win it (and in my opinion means a lot more to the community...when was the last time you drove through a Denver neighborhood and saw a sign that said "Home of the ___"?), so why does the states high school sanctioning body think this is ok?

Here is an easy solution...end the season 1 week earlier.  You don't have to schedule fewer games, just schedule 1 extra game per week for a couple weeks.  Another thought, balance the schedule so you play each team in your district twice, then take the top 4 from districts and seed into a regional bracket, thus eliminating the district tournament (and making the regular season games more meaningful).

Will it happen?  No...it doesn't effect the big schools so CHSAA doesn't care.  The big schools are the marquee schools, and everyone else is lucky to be able to play a CHSAA sanctioned schedule.

I understand this sounds like whining for the poor small schools, and to a degree it is.  I have been broadcasting games for 6 years though, and when I started there was always a CHSAA commisioner present to hand out a championship trophy at every state championship event...that is not the case now.  This year there were just "representatives" at the small school football championships that I went to.  Simply inexcuseable.

Just one man's opinion.
