STERLING, COLORADO- On 1/30/12, Deputies of the Logan County
Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of domestic violence just outside of
Sterling. The suspect, Gabriel Vasquez,
DOB 12/20/80, fled from the scene prior to the arrival of deputies.
After initial investigation,
responding deputies searched the area, including parts of Sterling, for a black
Toyota sedan that Vasquez was believed to be driving. Deputy Lindberg observed a matching vehicle
description at S. 8th Avenue and Hamilton Street in Sterling. At this time, Deputy Lindberg activated his
emergency lighting in an attempt to stop the suspect vehicle. The suspect vehicle failed to stop and a
pursuit ensued.
During the course of the
pursuit, the driver, later identified as Vasquez, failed to stop for several
stop signs, drove recklessly, and collided with another vehicle at Pine Street
and N. 3rd Street. Vasquez
continued the pursuit, but exited his vehicle at Broadway and Sidney where his
vehicle, still in drive, struck a parked vehicle.
Vasquez ran on foot until
finally being apprehended in an alleyway in the 300 block of Broadway
Street. Vasquez was transported to the
Sterling Regional Medical Center for evaluation and later transported to the
Logan County Detention Center where he was charged with:
- 42-4-1409(3) No Proof of Insurance, a class 1 misdemeanor
- 18-4-203 Second degree burglary, a class 3 felony
- 18-6-803.5(1) Violation of a Protection order, a class 1
misdemeanor
- 18-4-502 First Degree Criminal Trespass, a class 5 felony
- 18-6-401 Child Abuse, a class 2 misdemeanor
- 18-9-111(1) Harassment, a class 3 misdemeanor
- 18-6-801 Domestic Violence, a class 1 misdemeanor
- 18-9-116.5 Vehicular eluding, a class 4 felony
- 18-3-208 Reckless Endangerment, a class 3 misdemeanor
- 18-3-204 Third Degree Assault, a class 1 misdemeanor
- 42-4-4-1401(1) Reckless driving, a class 1 misdemeanor
- 42-4-1301(1)(a) Driving under the influence of alcohol drugs or
both, a class 1 misdemeanor
- 18-8-103(1)(b) Resisting Arrest, a class 2 misdemeanor
- 18-8-104(1)(a) Obstructing a peace officer, a class 2 misdemeanor
- 18-18-403.5(2) Unlawful possession of a controlled substance
(methamphetamines), a class 6 felony
- 18-18-428 Possession of drug paraphernalia, a class 2 petty
offense
- 42-4-703(3) Failure to stop at stop sign
- 42-4-1606(1) Failure to remain or return to accident scene, a
class 2 misdemeanor
Vasquez is being held at the
Detention Center on NO BOND, until advisement.
