Games against Casper provide
preview of season to come
Who better to know exactly how to
cook a great hamburger than the people who are actually involved with growing
the beef? This Saturday, November 23rd, the Northeastern Junior
College Beef Booster Club will be grilling up hundreds of beef patties as part
of its’ annual burger feed program which helps kick off a season, or build
attendance at games during the basketball season at Northeastern Junior
College. The NJC teams will be playing Casper College. The men will play at 3
p.m. as part of the Ramada Classic taking place that weekend. The women will
take the court at 5 p.m. This will be the first real opportunity for fans in
this area to see the teams in action with an opponent from the National Junior
College Athletic Association’s Region IX. Season outlooks for both the men and
women are looking especially good based on some of the pre-season tournament
play.
For a number of years now, the Beef
Boosters pull a grilling rig up onto the court in front of the Bank of Colorado
Event Center and fill the air with the aroma of good beef. Those who come to
the game get to fill up on free burgers as part of the price of admission.
Cooking will start in time to have burgers going into the buns a little before 3
p.m. Admission cost is $5 for seniors and non-NJC students and $6 for other
adults. Usually student athletes help with the serving of the burgers.
Condiments and a side item like potato chips accompany the burgers. What a
great way to spend a Saturday afternoon in Sterling. You get fed and also enjoy
some good basketball.
Beef Boosters is a northeastern
Colorado organization which supports NJC athletics. The group purchases items
not covered by the regular athletic budget. Among items donated by Beef
Boosters are the trophy cases found on the second floor of the Bank of Colorado
Event Center and the framing and mounting of the athletic pictures in the
lobby. They have also helped fund the expense of the new bleachers at Plainsman
Field. Each year the Beef Boosters host one or more free hamburger nights to
kick off the volleyball season and to help generate attendance at basketball
games.
This group of individuals purchase
one or more steers per year, pay for the feed for the steers and then upon sale
of the steer(s), donate the money to NJC athletics. You need not be a cattleman
or woman to participate, you can sponsor a steer, or choose to donate cash to
the program. For more information and details about Beef Boosters, contact Gene
Manuello at 522-7639.
