Peetz DC Club Car Wash May 10

The Peetz DC Club is having a car wash Saturday, May 10 from 9am-6pm. Bring in your cars, trucks, tractors, or anything and they will wash and vacuum it. Cost is $20 per vehicle with proceeds going to help send students to Washington DC. Tickets are available at the door, from any DC Club member, or RSVP to 970-334-2361 ext. 132 to schedule an appointment.

NJC site for Business of High School event

On Thursday, students from Merino and Peetz high schools were on the campus of Northeastern Junior College participating in a High School of Business program activity. Specifically, the students were making presentations before a group of business teachers and administrators to show off their problem solving skills. They came to campus with one business situation presentation which they had time to study and research prior to being on stage. They were also asked to take on an improv situation which forced them to  think on their feet during the session.

Last August, Northeast Colorado BOCES announced that it had been selected as a school site for the High School of Business™ program. The program is designed to challenge students through accelerated, project-based curriculum delivered in the context of business problems. Students completing the program are positioned to excel in college-level business administration programs.  Through an arrangement with NJC, students in this program are able to also earn some college credit for participation.

Students engaged in the High School of Business take part in project-based learning, which incorporates the learning of required skills into the process of solving real world business problems. Students complete a series of at least six rigorous business administration courses and in the process they must  use technology, hear from subject-matter expert guest speakers, complete an observational internship, and learn about business and community diversity through a partnership with a sister school.

A team from Peetz High School composed of sophomores  Jordan Buss, Adam Davis and Jordan Nelson and senior Josh Fiscus presented their scenario which involved a Super Hero based company that had experienced a 40 percent drop in sales. The team had to research and define why the sales were down and then make recommendations for how this could be corrected. The group talked about changes that needed to be made in everything from management, finance and accounting to operation and production, including the dismissal of some non-performing employees to be replaced by new Super Heros to get the job done right.

The group had named the various characters in the company, including a Marketing Monster and Mr. Management.  The end result was new products of higher quality and a return of good customer service and better sales. At the end of the presentation, they entertained questions from the audience. When asked how they thought this kind of learning had affected them, Fiscus was quick to say that being able to see the relevance of what they were working on as it really related to the class made it much easier to go to class. “Those classes where you just hear a lecture every day and then take a test on Friday—I hate them,” Fiscus admitted to the group.  For the presentation, one of the Peetz  team members even came dressed as a Super Hero.

Peetz Youth Basketball Registration November 5

Peetz Youth Basketball registration information is available on the school website at www.peetzschool.org. Signup is Tuesday, November 5 at 6:30pm in the Peetz School commons. Contact 970-520-9064 for more information. The Youth Club will pay for 2/3rds of the registration fee. Peetz Youth Basketball is for kids in 2nd - 6th grades.

Blue Skies Riding Poker Run June 1

Blue Skies Riding will hold their "Hogs 4 Horses" Poker Run June 1.  Registration is from 9:30-10:30am at Henry's Pub and Club in Sterling.  Cost is $25 per hand and all vehicles are welcome.  There will also be stops in Fleming, Haxtun, Sedgwick, Crook, and Peetz.  Proceeds benefit Blue Skies Therapeutic Horseback Riding Center.  For more information call 970-521-9965.

Smith and Geu Named Rising Stars at NJC

Students from Holyoke and Peetz honored at state luncheon

Two Northeastern Junior College (NJC) students were in Denver on Tuesday being recognized as Rising Stars on the Sterling campus. Janna Smith of Holyoke and Stephen Geu of Peetz, both sophomores, were recognized along with 22 other honorees from the 13 colleges that make up the Colorado Community College System.

Janna Smith, an animal science major, has been very active for the last two years as part of the college community. She is treasurer for the NJC Aggies Club, vice president of Phi Theta Kappa, a Crossroads Club leadership team member, a member of the Ambassador Team, and a member of the rodeo team. Janna is, or has been actively involved with 4-H, National Future Farmers of America and is on the board of directors for Platte Valley Rodeo Bible Camp. In her free time, Smith loves to show livestock, make leather crafts and ceramics. After finishing her studies at NJC, she plans to attend Colorado State University.

Stephan Geu was born and raised in Peetz and is the youngest of five boys. He is currently working on his associate’s degree in general studies. Geu is the president of the NJC Aggies Club, treasurer for the Collegiate Farm Bureau and is currently 1^st vice president of the Associated Student Government. Geu  is also highly involved with Future Farmers of America, is a Sunday school teacher, and is managing the greenhouse on campus.

Geu plans to attend the University of Wyoming to study agronomy, continue on for a doctoral degree and then return home to his family farm.

Both Smith and Geu have been honor roll students while attending Northeastern. This is the second year that Smith has received this particular award. She was also named to the Colorado All-Academic Team through Phi Theta Kappa.

The awards luncheon and ceremony was held at the Westminster Campus of Arapahoe Community College and was sponsored by the State Student Advisory Council. Dr. Jay Lee, president of Northeastern had the honor of introducing these stand-out students during the event. 

Peetz Craft Fair November 10

The Third Annual Peetz Christmas Craft Fair will be November 10 from 9 am to 5 pm in the Peetz School Commons. There will be lots of great gifts, from handmade jewelry to crocheted and knitted items to handcrafted wooden toys to great kitchen and food items! Come support locals and find unique gifts for everyone on your list!!!

Sterling Recreation Center to hold swim lesson registrations for NE Colorado Rural Schools

Sterling Recreation Center staff will conduct American Red Cross swimming lesson registration as follows for students of these rural schools:

April 27 - Registration for New Raymer, Stoneham, Merino, and Atwood will be held from 10:30-11:30am at Merino Elementary School

May 11 - Registration for Iliff, Padroni, Crook, and Proctor will be held from 8-9am at Caliche Elementary School

May 11 - Registration for Peetz will be held from 10-11am at Peetz Elementary School

Cost is $30 for 10 half-hour lessons.
