Hospice of the Plains Training in Holyoke

Hospice of the Plains is always looking for volunteers. They will have a Team Spring Volunteer Training class in Holyoke on June 2nd, June 16th, June 23rd, and June 30th each of those evenings from 6:00p - 8:30p. The training will take place at the Housing Authority Office in Holyoke, 330 West Kellogg. Registration ends May 30th. For more information or to register call 970-332-4116.

NJC offering athletic taping class June 11 - registration due June 6

Concussion research to also be covered

 Northeastern Junior College will be offering a special class for those who are engaged in athletic training or sports medicine activities with teams of all kinds.  An Athletic Taping Techniques and Concussion Research class will be held on Tuesday, June 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This class is approved by the Colorado High School Athletic Association (CHSAA).        

                         

Those who take this class will learn new ways to or improve their current athletic taping skills.  The class will cover the most common athletic taping mistakes and provide correct alternatives. Class content will also include a review of the most up-to-date research on concussions. Answers will be provided regarding how to identify and treat concussions;  when it is appropriate to refer the athlete to medical personal and when it is safe for an athlete to return to play.

Participants are asked to bring two rolls of athletic pre-wrap and 10 roles of athletic tape. Multiple taping exercises will be done in class in a very hands-on training atmosphere.  The instructor for this class is Kari Mueller. The cost of the half credit class is $73.39. Those who want to participate in this daylong class should register to attend by Thursday, June 6^th by calling 521-6900.

Colorado DOC Search Team Training Nov 21

On Wednesday November 21 the Colorado Department of Corrections Search Team will be conducting training.  Training will take place between the hours of 5am and 2:30pm, and will be held in an around the City of Sterling, Town of Atwood, Town of Merino, Town of Fleming, Town of Iliff, and may include city streets and also county roads.  For questions call 970-521-8817.

NJC to again hold excavation exercise

This year’s event includes fire training as well

Just as in past years,  Northeastern Junior College’s  Criminal Justice, Fire Science, and Anthropology Departments  will conduct an excavation exercise this week, allowing students an opportunity to have some excellent hands-on training in forensic recovery and crime scene investigation. This year, a fire science training component has been added to the several  day exercise.  The college invites interested community members to observe and participate in the schedule of activities.

On Thursday, October 11^th from 8:00 a.m. to 3 p.m., instructors and students will be doing a crime scene investigation and the forensic excavation of an anonymously donated deceased dog.  In past years, the subject excavated has been a pig. From 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.  students will disarticulate the subject and prepare the scene for processing. Processing will promptly follow the disarticulation. Typically this will take no more than an hour.

On Sunday, October 14^th beginning at 8 a.m., students from the Fire Academy at NJC will undergo some wildland fire training as well as have some training in the recovery of burned human (pig analogue) remains.

All of these activities will take place on the farmland owned by Northeastern, located third fourth miles west of town on County Road 32 just off County Road 39.  There is limited parking area. Spectators are encouraged to park away from the scene and walk to the location of the activities, staying clear of the marked locations where crime scene activity has been staged.
