2011 NJC Auto Show Results

There were 48 life-size and 37 model car entries in the 2011 Northeastern Junior College Auto Show held this weekend in Sterling. Of the 85 entries, 81 of them were judged.

In the show floor competition, The People's Choice Award went to Jim Dorland of Eaton, CO for his bright yellow 1934 Dodge Convertible. Presidents Choice Award went to another bright yellow car, a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro owned and displayed by Roger and Cherie Brungardt of Sterling, CO. The Club’s Choice Award went to a 1961 Ford Thunderbird entered by Hank Binder of Golden, CO and the Best Display Award went to the 1976 Ford Gran Torino Starsky and Hutch entry by Conrad Bostron of Sterling. A special award provided by Bev Umphenhour and presented in her late husband Joe’s name went to Lou Becker of Golden for his 1941 Chevy Coupe. The award was presented by Will Willis of Denver, President of the Inliners International , an organization of which Umphenhour was a charter member and dedicated supporter. Becker’s car was chosen as the best inliner “8” of the show.

The Top 20 award winners for this year’s show included: In the Motorcycles Class: a 2007 Swift Punisher entered by Ron Nestor; , a 2006 Thunder Mountain Blackhawk 240 entered by Chris McKay, Sterling; In the Pick-Up Class, a 1956 Ford F-100 entered by Bob Klein, Sterling; a 1933 Chevy Pickup entered by Abe Jones, Wheatridge; In the Street Machine 48's and Older Class, a 1941 Chevy Coupe entered by Lou Becker, Boulder ; a 1934 Dodge Convertible entered by Jim Dorland, Eaton; in the 3rd Generation 80's and up category, a 2003 Ford Thunderbird entered by Hank Binder, Golden; in the Street Machine 49-79 category, a 1964 Ford Thunderbird Landau entered by Ralph and Marge Bretton, McCook, Neb; a 1955 Chevy 210/Belair entered by Tom Gillen, Franktown, CO; a 1967 Chevy Camaro entered by Dusty Parsons, Burlington, CO; 1969 Chevy Camaro RS/S entered by Mike Carlson, Westminster, C O; a 1967 Mercury Cyclone entered by Mark Fitzjohn, Sterling, CO; a 1970 Chevy Corvette Roadster entered by Todd Perkins, Kersey, CO; a 1969 Chevy Camaro entered by Roger and Cherie Brungardt, Sterling, CO; a 1955 Ford Thunderbird entered by Larry Schaefer, Sterling, CO; a 1970 Chevy Chevelle II SS 454 entered by Ray Hardy, Yuma, CO; a 1967 Chevy Camaro entered by Rick and Nancy Wagner, Sterling: CO; a 1967 Pontiac GTO entered by Joe Ramos, Sterling, CO; a 1961 Ford Thunderbird entered by Hank Binder, Golden, CO; and a 1976 Ford Gran Torino entered by Conrad Bostron, Sterling, CO.

The 2011 Model Car Show results are as follows: The top award of the show, the People’s Choice for model car entry went to Kyle Duggan of Littleton for a 1960’s Front Engine Dragster. In the 6-12 years of age competition, 1st Place went to Jayce Estrada of Sterling, CO for his 1969 Dodge Charger; in the 13-16 age category: 1st Place went to Rachelle Brungardt of Sterling entering a Ford "T" Roadster; and 2nd Place went to Skyler Brungardt, also of Sterling for a 1969 Chevrolet Yenko Camaro. In the 17 and older category, 1st Place went to Mark Walters of Sterling for a 1940 Ford Coupe Custom and 2nd Place went to a 1965 Chevrolet Tow Truck entered by Travis Murphy of Sterling.

More than 1,000 paying spectators attended the show making it a wonderful fundraiser for the NJC Auto Tech’s Club.
