Logan County is celebrating its
125th Anniversary as a county this year. Logan County was formed by an act of the
Colorado State Legislature on February 25, 1887. The County was formerly a part of Weld County
and citizens from the eastern part of the state were required to travel to
Greeley, the county seat to conduct official business. Citizens petitioned the state legislature to
form the new county. Later on, Phillips
and Sedgwick Counties were created from the original Logan County.
To celebrate this milestone, a
special event is being planned for Friday, June 1, 2012 at the Courthouse
Square. We are calling it A Taste of
Logan County. Area restaurants have been
invited to attend and give samples away of their best or most popular
foods. Music will be featured in the
gazebo from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. with a dance in the Courthouse parking lot from
8:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. Scheduled to perform are the Windsong Chorus, Centennial
State Chorus, Roger Hosea on Bagpipes, High Plains Quartet Prairie Pickers,
Jeff Broome and Jimmy Schneider. Free
ice cream will be given away to those in attendance while quantities last.
Local authors are invited to set
up a table for book sales and book signing, games for the children are being
planned as well as a horse shoe pit.
Later in the evening, the
Sterling Lions Club will sell hamburgers and hot dogs to concert goers. The
Sterling Elks Lodge is planning to operate a beer garden on their property
across the street during the street dance.
Raffle tickets will be sold for
a .22 caliber Commemorative Logan County/Logan County Sheriff Golden Boy rifle
beginning on June 1, 2012. Tickets will
cost $5.00 each with a drawing held during intermission of the DDRA Demo Derby
on Sunday, August 12. Logan County 125th
anniversary commemorative coins and Logan County Sheriff 125th
anniversary coins can be purchased as souvenirs.
During the Logan County Fair a
“Then and Now” display will be held in the DeSoto Building. Photographers can enter a photo of a home,
commercial building, store front, landmark, etc. from an earlier era along side
a current photo. Other items that fit
the “Then and Now” theme are also welcome for the display. The display will be in the DeSoto building
during fair week.
We invite you all to attend this
event to celebrate the vast heritage of Logan County.
