Sterling Public Library to host "Online Safety" and "Three Steps To Protecting Your Identity"

Sterling Public Library is sponsoring two informational programs by the BBB Foundation Education and Outreach.  Manager Shelly Glauser will present the programs on Monday, Sept. 24th in the library Community Room.  Online Safety will be presented at 2:30 p.m. and Three Steps to Protecting Your Identity will be at 6:30 p.m.

Online Safety will give you the tools needed to be as safe as possible when online.  Ms. Glauser will cover password protection recommendations, signs of security on a website and privacy on social networking websites.  In addition information about online shopping, including safe ways to pay for products and services, a review of how online marketing works and scams individuals should be aware of will be discussed.  The program will help you recognize a legitimate website from a phony one or know what a company’s policies are regarding your information online.

Three Steps to Protecting your Identity will provided information on how ID thieves operate and the three steps you can take to protect yourself.  Ms. Glauser will talk about the two newest and fast-growing areas of identity theft – medical and child identity theft.  Every year more than 11 million people are victims of identity theft.  The perpetrator may be someone you know or a scam artist thousands of miles away.  Identity theft happens online, offline, even in your home.  Join us at the library and learn about what you can do to protect yourself.
