STERLING MAN ARRESTED ON ANIMAL CRUELTY CHARGES - FOUR HORSES REMOVED

Sterling, Colorado – On February 1st, 2013, Carl Mahaffey, DOB 1/16/57, was arrested on
charges of ‘Cruelty to Animals –Neglect’ C.R.S. 18-9-202(1)(a), a class 6 Felony. The Logan
County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation on Mahaffey, after receiving complaints
regarding the condition of four horses on a property on County Road 39. A search warrant
was obtained on January 31st, 2013, and executed today. During that search, four horses
were seized and removed from the property. The horses were taken to the Sterling Livestock
Commission Company because their immediate welfare was in question.

Colorado State Brand Inspectors assisted during the removal of the animals. Mahaffey was held
at the Logan County Detention Center with no bond, pending advisement in court.

Colorado’s Bureau of Animal Protection was informed of the crimes, and is assisting with
shelter placement of the horses. The Department’s BAP program investigates over 12,000
reports of animal cruelty and neglect annually in Colorado. Species investigated in FY08/09
include:

*Dogs: 9,543 (78 percent of all investigations)
*Horses: 1,588 (13 percent of all investigations)
*Cats: 688 (6 percent of all investigations)
*Cattle: 38 (.3 percent of all investigations)
