NJC nursing program receives Virtual IV simulator

***NJC Press Release***

As part of the Eastern Colorado Workforce SECTORS Healthcare Grant Consortium, the Northeastern Junior College Department of Nursing was awarded a Virtual I.V. Simulator. The Virtual I.V. is a comprehensive, fully interactive self-directed learning system for training intravenous catheterization. Powerful 3D graphics provide visual realism, while a state-of-the-art force feedback device accurately simulates the sense of touch for a truly immersive experience. The computerized simulator allows students to practice intravenous care on high risk patients with emphasis on older adults.  It allows the student to use critical thinking skills to solve specific intravenous therapy complications. The I.V. simulator, which includes a computer monitor and a haptics device which replicates a patient’s arm, has over 150 distinct case scenarios and the virtual patients respond with bleeding, bruising, swelling as well as other patho-physiological reactions.  The Virtual I.V. learning system records and evaluates students’ performance and presents thorough debriefing following each case. The debriefing gives the students both positive reinforcement, as well as clear instruction that can be used to improve their abilities and training. Julie Brower, director of nursing programs, reports this new tool will allow students’ hands on experience in a safe practice environment that will help promote important skills for nursing students. “The department feels very fortunate to have received such a wonderful piece of equipment,” Brower noted.
