During its year-end athletic
awards night, Northeastern Junior College recognized a number of athletes for
their exceptional performance this past year in men’s soccer, women’s
volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s softball and men’s baseball.
Among the awards presented was the Darold Propp Student Athlete Award.
Darold Propp was an avid fan of
Northeastern athletics, rarely missing a game. He was a fixture in the Jackson
and Edwards Arena inside the Bank of Colorado Event Center on campus during
basketball season. Wheelchair bound, Propp had an established parking place on
the sideline in the gym. He followed the athletes with a keen ability to
remember performance history and team statistics. So much so that he was asked
to help select the All-Region players on more than one occasion when
Northeastern hosted the Region IX men’s or women’s basketball tournaments.
In Darold’s member, his family
established an annual award at the college in his name. The Darold Propp
Student Athlete Award will be presented each year to the student-athlete who
most exemplifies the love of the game and honors NJC athletics through respect,
positive attitude, work ethic, and leadership. The first recipient of this
annual award is Hannah Pollart.
Pollart just graduated from NJC,
receiving an associate of arts degree with a psychology emphasis on May
11th. The 5’11” power forward was an honor roll student at NJC and
was a member of Phi Theta Kappa. She had a number of leading stats in Region IX
of the National Junior College Athletic Association this year and was named to
the All-Region Team. She played high school basketball in Powell, WY, however,
her parents have since relocated to southeastern Colorado, living in Holly where
her dad, Chuck originated. Her mother, Sue (Owens), was, for a long time, the
head women’s volleyball coach at NJC. Sue continued her collegiate career by
coaching the volleyball team at the community college in Powell when the family
moved there.
Hannah will continue her
collegiate basketball career in Oklahoma. She has signed to play at Cameron
University in Lawton.
