The Cheyenne VA Medical Center will hold the community’s annual “Veterans Stand Down” on Thursday, October 24, at American Legion, Post 6 located at 2001 E. Lincolnway. Between 9:00am – 2:00pm Veterans who are homeless or at “at-risk” of becoming homeless are invited to the American Legion, Post 6 in Cheyenne to learn about information and services available.
Stand Downs are collaborative events between local VAs, other government entities, and community agencies who serve the homeless. According to Lisa Gossert, Social Worker and Cheyenne VA Homeless Programs Coordinator, “currently, the Comea Shelter in Cheyenne houses approximately 70 people who are homeless. Of that number, approximately 21% indicate they are Veterans.”
Each year the “Veterans Stand Down” provides information on a range of community and VA assistance including VA registration, VA’s Health Care for Homeless Veterans (HCHV) program, dental screening, women’s health services, substance use and other mental wellness counseling, VA Chaplains, community housing options, food, clothing, blankets and free barbering. These services will meet the immediate and long term needs of the homeless to help them live productive, meaningful lives.
In addition to information and services breakfast, lunch, flu shots, dental screenings, barbering, clothing and blankets will be immediately available.
