Northeastern Junior College’s
wellness center and Extended Studies Department are offering you some new
opportunities to keep your new year’s resolution. Five new fitness classes begin
on January 24th. Sign up now to enroll as they are expected to be
popular offerings. The instructors are seasoned fitness experts who have
mastered their own physical fitness and enjoy sharing what they know with other
learners.
The college has always offered yoga
classes, and this continues when Petie Sabala and Connie Henderson return to
teach at different times on different days. Sabala will offer yoga from 4:30 to
5:30 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays, January 24th to March
14th. Henderson will teach a yoga offering from 12:10 p.m. to 1:10
p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays, January 23-March 15th. Yoga will
enhance general health and well-being through strength, flexibility, balance and
relaxation techniques and exercises. Students practice yoga according to their
individual fitness levels and abilities.
Kari Mueller will offer a circuit
training class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, January 24-March 14th from
4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Circuit training is a form of conditioning that combines
both resistance and cardio training to improve fitness and health. By varying
the intensity throughout an activity, students will burn fat and eliminate
boredom.
Mueller will also offer a cardio
blast class on Mondays and Wednesdays, January 23-March 13th from
5:30 to 6:30 p.m. This will be a high energy, fun cardio class set to music
that will get your body moving. Cardio will include a variety of high and low
floor work, intervals and basic dance moves. Strength, balance and flexibility
exercises are also included. All levels of fitness are welcome and it is a great
calorie burning workout.
Lindsey Lorenzo, a seasoned
instructor returns this January with a popular Pilates class. She will teach
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., January 24-March
14th. Pilates is the ultimate exercise for anyone who wants to tone,
streamline, and realign their body. The focus is on the abdominals, or
“powerhouse,” which supports the back; this makes Pilates an ideal exercise for
those with back problems--or those hoping to prevent them.
New this semester will be a
kettlebells class, taught by Kari Mueller, on Mondays and Wednesdays, January
23-March 13th from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Kettlebells are bowling
ball sized weights with a single lopped handle on top. They range in weight from
two pounds to over 100 pounds. Kettlebells focus on conditioning and engage
multiple muscle groups at once. They are a great way to get a whole body workout
in a short time.
All of these classes will be held at
the Bank of Colorado Event Center and include an 8-week membership to the
facility. Students in these classes can work-out as many times as they choose
per week during this time. The cost is $134.72 or a mere $16.84 per week or
$2.80 per day (based on six days a week) which is less than the daily punch card
rate. These instructors are all happy to work with individuals of all fitness
levels, helping you see how to modify movements for your particular
ability.
To register for any of these five
classes, contact the Extended Studies Department at 521-6900.
