One of the great
perks that accompanies winning the Nell Propst Historical Essay Contest is that
Sterling Monument donates a beautiful engraved plaque with your photo on it to
your high school. As the 2013 essay winner, Carl Rosa, Jr., now a freshman at
Northeastern Junior College, recently returned to the halls of Sterling High
School to participate in the plaque presentation. When he was a senior at SHS
last March, he entered the annual Nell Propst Historical Essay Contest. His
essay, “Collegiate Dreams in the Northeastern Corner,” was the top winner. His
essay was co-sponsored by Sara Wernsman and Nancy Kugler, both teachers at the
high school. It was coincidental that his essay, which outlined much of the
history of the junior college was the top award. The contest is judged by a
panel not affiliated with the college. The essay contest is overseen by an
independent board, however the funds for the scholarship and sponsor awards,
which were donated by Frank and Gloria Walsh, are managed by the Northeastern
Junior College Foundation. Students who win may use their scholarship at any
college of their choice.
As the essay
winner, Rosa received a $2,000 scholarship to the college of his choice. His
sponsors also shared a $1,000 prize to be used at Sterling High School.
Contestants must write a thesis on local history limited to an individual, group
of individuals or event affecting or occurring within the geographic areas
serviced by designated school districts within Northeastern Colorado. Each
school may have unlimited entries, but can only submit the top two entries for
the final judging.
In 2013, the
contest expanded to also include a competition where area students may submit a
cover-art entry to be used as the front of the book which is published annually
to contain all the essays written by the students who enter. Sterling High
School did well in 2013 when Andrea Northrup won this category as well with her
entry entitled “Calving Season.” Northrup received a $1,000 scholarship and her
sponsor, Karen Foote, was awarded a $500 prize to be used at Sterling High
School.
The essay and
art contest returns in 2014. Entries from students grades 9-12, will be due on
March 1st. There are rules and regulations regarding the contest.
Home schooled students are also encouraged to compete. For more details about
the contest visit the following website: NPHEC.com Scholarship awards are
given to both the first and second place in the essay contest and to the overall
cover art winner. High Schools in this region, who may enter the contest, have
received information about the 2014 deadline. Students interested in competing
should approach their art, history and English teachers at their respective high
schools.
