Kid Swim Classes Start Jan 18 at WRAC in Wray

The WRAC in Wray is bringing back the ever-popular Kid Swim. Swim classes will begin Saturday, January 18th and will run for 6 weeks. For more information regarding class times, fees, or to sign your child up, stop by the front desk or call 332-4451.

Sterling Recreation Center holding registration for Swim Lessons

The Sterling Recreation Center will have registration for American Red Cross swimming lessons Monday, June 10 through Thursday, June 13.  This is the second summer session of swimming lessons.  Openings will be filled on a first come first served basis.  Registrations will only be accepted at the Sterling Recreation Center, 808 Elm Street in Sterling.  Phone-in registrations are not accepted.

Classes are held Monday-Friday, June 17-28.

Classes include:

  • Parent & Child - $30 for 10-half hour lessons
  • Transition to Independence through Level 6 - $30 for 10-half hour lessons
Interested persons can contact the Recreation Center at 522-7882 for a complete list of current swimming lesson classes and times, or if you have questions about the remaining summer sessions of lessons.

Sterling Lions Club Hosts “Tri on the Plains” Sprint/Triathlon June 23

Sterling, CO – The Sterling Lions Club took a cue from last years’ sporting events to host a sprint/triathlon called “Tri on the Plains”; a 700 meter swim / 15 mile bike / 5K run event for athletes on Sunday, June 23, 2013.  In addition, the Lions Club will host an “Open” or mini-triathlon for beginners, families and children.

“Tri on the Plains” is a fundraiser where proceeds will be used to benefit Lions Club sight projects. The Sterling Lions Club, the largest of the Lions organizations on the eastern plains, hosts a variety of events throughout the year to generate funds for sight projects, such as the Pancake Night for Sight and Tri on the Plains.  In addition, the Sterling Lions Club participates in the community through the KidSight Program and support of the Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Bank & Eye Institute Foundation.

In addition to participating in the event on June 23rd, the Sterling Lions Club “Tri” committee is also looking for local sponsors, ranging from $100 Fan sponsors to $1,000 Gold sponsors.  Sponsorships include a variety of marketing & advertising options as well as complimentary event registrations.

Pricing for “Tri on the Plains” starts at $25 for the “Open” or mini-tri, $70 for Individuals (full Sprint triathlon), and $90 for Relay Teams.  Prices increase $5 starting June 1 and the host hotel is the Comfort Inn in Sterling.  More information and registration can be located on the event website www.triontheplains.org.

Registration for Sterling Swim Team Underway

Registration is currently underway for the 2013 Sterling Swim Team.  Registration forms are available at the Sterling Recreation Center, 808 Elm Street in Sterling.

Pre-summer practices are optional and run Tuesday, April 16 through Thursday, May 16.  They are for new or returning swim team members ages 6 to 18.  Pre-summer practices are conducted Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45-4:45pm.  Participants can attend pre-summer workouts after paying the Swim Team registration fee of $50, or by paying a $4 per day trial fee.  The fee includes all pre-season practices, regular season practices, C.A.R.A. registration and meet fees.

Summer practices begin Monday, June 3, and are held Monday through Friday.  Swimmers will participate in swimming drills, receive instruction on competitive swim strokes, and do fun swimming activities.

The summer swim team practices are held outdoors.  Practices are scheduled Monday through Friday from 10-11:30am for all age groups.  The Sterling Swim Team participates in the Colorado Association of Recreational Athletics (C.A.R.A.) swimming program.  C.A.R.A. swim meets are held every other Saturday beginning June 15 in cities along the front range.

Before being allowed to participate or practice with the swim team, perspective swim team members will be tested.  They must be able to swim one length of the pool, using the proper front crawl technique.  They must correctly alternate their arms, keep their face in water, and turn head to just on side to breathe.  They cannot stop or touch the bottom at all during the test.

5:30-6:30pm - Lap Swim (both pools)

*The outdoor pool will not be open, or may close early, if the air temperature is below 70 degrees Fahrenheit
