Teen Read Week at Sterling Public Library Includes Movie October 17

October 13 – 19, 2013 is Teen Read Week.  The intent of the week is to encourage young adults to read for the fun of it.  Libraries across the U.S. will illustrate how fun reading can be in a number of ways during the week.

In celebration of the week Sterling Public Library will be showing a movie for teens on October 17th at 6:00 p.m. in the teen area.  The library will provide popcorn and kids can bring a bottled drink.  For more information about the movie call the library at 522-2023.

Sterling Public Library has many services for teens.  Many of the services are available online such as downloadable books and audios on Across Colorado Digital Consortium; EBSCOhost, a great reference database for completing homework or just looking up information; Freegal a great site for free music downloads; and Ask Colorado, a human-powered search engine you can ask all types of questions.

Friends of East Morgan County Library in Brush Book Sale Sept 27-28

The Friends Organization of East Morgan County Library is holding its Oktoberfest book sale Friday, September 27 and Saturday, September 28, in the newly remodeled Book Cellar.  All items for sale have been recently donated and all proceeds support the library.  The sale is open: Friday, September 27 for Friends Members from 11am to 1pm, and Saturday, September 28 for the General Public during the Oktoberfest from 10am to 1pm.

Sterling Public Library Events - Week of July 15

Join Sterling Public Library on Monday, July 15^th for Dig Up Some Fun @ the Library.  This week’s theme is dinosaurs.  Denise has some fun dinosaur stories to share.  Then we will be making sparkling dinosaurs as we use glitter to make our one of a kind dinosaurs.

 On Tuesday, July 16^h at 3:00 p.m. Sterling Public Library will provide “Digging” as the Art Challenge.  The group will be will be using sand to make their creations this week.   The Art Challenge is for kids age 10 to 15.  Space in this program is limited to 24 and registration is required. Please register early for this program so we can accurately purchase items.  You may call 522-2023 to register.

On Thursday, July 18^th at 10:00 a.m. we will host Brunch, Books & Library B.S. (Best Sellers). There are still a few tickets left for this program. Tickets are free but required due to limited space.  During the brunch library staff will discuss exciting things happening at the library and share some our favorite books with our guests.  We hope that our guests will also share some of their favorite books with us. 

On Thursday, July 18^th at 3:00 p.m. is our last Ground Breaking Snacks for kids grades 6 through 12.  This is a time for young adults to get together share a cool treat and talk.  The group can discuss movies, books, games or topics of their choice.  Meet your friends for a great time at the library.

We are more than half way through the Summer Reading Program at Sterling Public Library.  There is still time to register and start reading.  Did you know that the use of the public library during the summer is more predictive of vocabulary gains than attending summer school.  This is just one reason to read for fun during the summer.  Remember if you are borrowing books from Overdrive and downloading them to your e-reader, these books also count for your reading time.

If you have been reading and haven’t turned in time yet, it is a great time to come in and log your time.  July 26^th is the last day to turn in reading time.  Those who complete 6 levels are eligible to come to the closing program.  This year’s closing program theme is pirates.

Sterling Public Library hosting "Indiana Bones" July 16

On Tuesday, July 16^th at 7:00 p.m. Sterling Public Library will host Indiana Bones.  Indiana Bones, aka Mike McCartney, will combine archaeology, action, adventure and ancient legends to entertain us.  Indiana Bones makes stories come to life.  Indiana Bones has traveled the world digging up stories to share. Indiana Bones has a special guest (Draco the Dragon) he brings with him that is sure to be lots of fun.  With the use of artifacts, fossils, lively puppets and a crack of his bull whip, Indy leads the audience on a great journey.

Mike McCartney resides in Santa Fe, NM.  He was a former PBS documentary producer/writer, TV personality, professional actor and faculty member of Mississippi State University. Indy is now a full time professional storyteller, telling stories to kids all over.

Sterling Public Library has a new program called Groundbreaking Snacks for teens.  The first program will be Thursday, June 6^th at 3:00 p.m.  This will be an informal program that gives teens a chance to meet and eat at the library.  Meet your friends at the library at 3:00 p.m. and have a snack as you talk about a book movie, video game or anything you want. 

Our Monday Dig Up Some Fun @ the Library program on June 10^th is Dig Into Rocks and Minerals.  Denise has some fun stories to share with everyone.  After stories we will be making pet rocks.  Be sure to join us and add a pet to your house.

 On Tuesday, June 11th at 3:00 p.m. Sterling Public Library will provide “Rocking” as the Art Challenge.  The group will be working on a “My Friends/Family Rock” project.   The Art Challenge is for kids age 10 to 15.  Space in this program is limited to 24 and registration is required. You may call 522-2023 to register.

The library will show its first movie on June 12^th at 7:00 p.m.  It will be a fun movie with lots of humor.  There is a simple plan to win a medal but soon everything is wrecked.  The movie is open to all ages.  Children under 8 must be accompanied by and adult over 18 years of age. The library will provide snacks.  You may bring your own drink. 

On Thursday, June 13^th Connie will provide Toddle Time.  They will be exploring stories and finishing by creating a pet rock.  Toddle Time is for kids age 3 and under.

The library staff hopes everyone is having a great summer.  If you haven’t registered for the Summer Reading Program yet, be sure to stop in and do so.  Summer is a great time to read for fun!

Upcoming Programs at Sterling Public Library

Summer Reading is in full swing at Sterling Public Library.  We have lots of fun activities planned for kids of all ages this summer. 

Each Monday at 2:00 p.m. we will provide Dig Up Some Fun @ The Library.  During the programs we will dig into a different adventure each week.

During our first program on Monday June 3^rd we will dig into gardening.  We will make an unusual flower pot and insert our flowers.

We will again have special rewards for kids participating in the Monday programs and checking out a book. Each week that they attend one of the programs on Monday they will also receive part to the book worm.  It is not required that you attend every week, but come as often as you can.  Registration is not required. 

Each Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. Sterling Public Library is again offering a special program for kids age 10 through 15 called Dig Deep Art Challenge.  This is an eight week program that focuses on different art techniques each week.  The program will last at least 1 hour.  These programs will be more in-depth than the usual programs offered during the summer, teaching them various skills and techniques needed to complete a project. You may attend any or all of the programs. You must register for each program individually.  Registration begins the Wednesday before the program.  You may call 522-2023 to register.  Classes are limited to 24.

The first Art Challenge will be on June 4^th.  During our first week we will be painting flower pots.  We will also learn a little bit about gardening as we plant vegetables outside in the courtyard and flowers in our new pots.

On Wednesday, June 5^th at 7:00 p.m. we will Dig into Books by focusing on book illustrator Scott Nash. Scott provided the artwork used for the Summer Reading Program.  The program will be fun for kids of all ages.  Denise will be sharing some of the books Scott has illustrated.  We will complete a craft related to one of Scott’s summertime books.

If you haven’t signed up and started reading, be sure to come to the library and get signed up.  As you keep track of the time you read Sterling Public Library books, you will be earning prizes and working toward attending the closing program.  Be sure to join us for a great summer!

Sterling Public Library Hosting Book Signings June 1 and 4

Sterling Public Library will be hosting book signings for two authors.  On June 1, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. former Sterling resident Susan (Gertner) Davis will be at the library.  Susan will talk about her books before the signing.

Mrs. Davis now lives in Inman Kansas and loves to write about people and places that have touched her life.  While growing up on a small farm between Iliff and Padroni she dreamed of writing a short story about their daily lives and experiences.  Now she has written several books.  Her first book was “Small Farm & Big Family” which has sold out.  Susan’s latest book “Ancestery’s Journey” will be available for sale.

Susan never gave up her desire to write.  After marrying Ben, she saw a tiny ad in a magazine about a correspondence writing course offered by the Institute of Children’s Literature.  Mrs. Davis enrolled and after completing the course, discovered what it felt like to have her stories rejected by publishers.  Her first published short story was about learning how to drive on the farm.  It was printed by the Colorado Fence Post in 1989.  The editor continued to print many more stories, poems and puzzles that she submitted.  Since 2003 Mrs. Davis has written a monthly children’s column for the Plains Fence Post.  Her short stories also currently appear in Prairie Times.

One June 4, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. Tony Graff will be at the library to talk about his book “Juniper Crescent” and autograph copies.

In Tony’s book Oksanya suffers from muscular dystrophy or did until an operation cured her.  This operation called the Isis operation is listed as a miracle cure.  It can cure cancer, genetic disorders and extend human abilities beyond their natural limits.  Oksanya was cured by having the corrupted genes replaced by the genes of a cheetah.  It gave her the cure she was looking for and she developed the ability to fun faster than anyone else.  However, society is drawing a line.  Either this is the miracle cure we have been waiting for or it is the latest toolbox for criminals.

Tony was born in Junction City, Kansas and later made Colorado his home. He currently lives in Sterling with his wife, Megan.  His writing career began in 2008 with Juniper Crescent.  When he isn’t writing, you can find him reading a young adult novel, crocheting or enjoying an episode of Doctor Who.

Sterling Public Library Providing 2 Programs May 30

Sterling Public Library will provide two programs on Thursday, May 30^th.

Sterling Public Library is offering a special program for toddlers age 3 and under every other Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m.  The first Toddle Time program will be held on May 30^th.  The kids will enjoy stories and crafts centered around our Summer Reading theme – “Dig into Reading”.  The theme for this Thursday will be dirt.  Registration is not required so join us for great stories and lots of fun.

On May 30^th at 2:00 p.m. our program will be “The Dirt on Dirt.”  Kids of all ages are invited to this program.  Denise has some great stories and a fun craft to share as we begin a summer of digging into reading.

Sterling Public Library Summer Reading Program Kickoff May 28

Join us for the Summer Reading Program kickoff on May 28th at 7 p.m. at the Sterling Public Library.  Ann Lincoln as a kooky cavewoman and her magical pets will encourage kids to “Dig into Reading”.

Imagine if you walked into your local library and saw a crazy cavewoman reading a magic book that looked like it might be on fire!  Now imagine that her rabbit suddenly appears out of nowhere and her pet dog is performing silly tricks.  Finally imagine that she starts to throw bowling balls over her head!  You won’t have to imagine if you come to the Sterling Public Library on Tuesday, May 28th at 7:00 PM for Ann Lincoln’s Dino Girl Show.  Ann’s juggling, magic and comedy performance will be a big part of the fun for this summer’s “Dig into Reading” theme.  The show is free and open to everyone.

“Dino Girl is one of my all time favorite characters to perform,” says Lincoln.  “I get to be someone completely wacky and so different from who I usually am and my imagination just runs wild!”  Ann says that she hopes that seeing a full-grown woman being so extremely creative and enthusiastic about a subject will inspire the kids to use the library’s resources to learn more about their favorite things.  To that end, Ann will provide a suggested reading list to all interested audience members after her performance.  She has included possible subjects from the show to explore further, some juvenile appropriate titles to check into and more than a dozen books that she herself read in order to prepare for that day’s entertainment.

“I firmly believe in the goal to keep children reading and learning all summer,” Ann enthuses.    “I feel very lucky to get to use my time, energy and talent toward that goal.  Children who join a summer reading program at their public library keep their brains stimulated and go back to school in the fall ready to learn more.  And that’s good for everyone!”

Ann Lincoln has been a full-time professional entertainer for nearly 30 years.   She will be performing at libraries all across Colorado (and beyond) this summer. 

Registration for Summer Reading Program at Sterling Public Library Starts May 20

It’s time to register for the Summer Reading Program at Sterling Public Library.  The theme for this year’s program is “Dig Into Reading”.  Registration begins Monday, May 20, 2013 and continues through the summer. 

On Monday, May 20^th from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. the library will hold a Summer Reading Extravaganza.  During that time kids will be able to play a special game, create their own snack and register for the program.

Those signing up during the week of May 20^th may begin reading as soon as they register.  Reading time can be turned in beginning May 28^th at 6:00 p.m.  Reading materials need to be from Sterling Public Library.  This includes e-books and e-audios checked out from Across Colorado Digital Consortium.

 Anyone age 2 to 100+ may participate.  Participants will be divided into 6 groups according to age.  Each of the categories is designed with the age of the child in mind. 

Participants age 2 through grade 12 will get a prize for the first 6 levels of reading completed.  For each level completed participants are also entered in the drawing for grand prizes.  This year we have added some additional prizes that can be earned for levels 12 and 18.  As you turn in time you will learn more about these prizes.

Remember summer is a time for fun and reading should be an enjoyable part of your summer.  Reading for enjoyment can also help children maintain or improve skills.  Parents may also participate in the program and set a good example for your children.  We hope to see everyone reading this summer.

Sterling Public Library to Kick Off One Book 4 Colorado May 6

Sterling Public Library invites all 4 year olds and their families to the kickoff of One Book 4 Colorado on May 6^th at 4:00 p.m.  Lt. Governor Joe Garcia will be at this special event.  During the program he will read the book that will be given to all 4 year olds.  Following the program 4 year olds may pick up their copy of the book and complete a craft.

The Governor, Lt. Governor, and Denver Mayor will launch One Book 4 Colorado when they announce the book title at the Denver Public Library on the morning of May 6^th. The giveaway period for the book is May 6^th to 20^th.

Sterling Public Library has many events planned as we promote the distribution of books to 4 year olds.   On the following days and times the library will provide a special craft related to the book: 

Wednesday, May 8^th               5:00  - 7:00 p.m.

Saturday, May 11^th                 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.

Tuesday, May 14^th                  4:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Thursday, May 16^th                 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.

All kids are invited to attend any or all of these events.  If a 4 year old is unable to attend one of the programs they can stop by the library during regular hours to pick up their copy of the book.

Sterling Public Library is happy to be a part of this wonderful project.  We love being able to hand out the books and help instill the love of reading in young children. 

One Book 4 Colorado is the result of collaboration between Reach Out and Read, Colorado State Library, public libraries, the private sector, and the foundation community. More than 70,000 copies of the same book will be distributed across Colorado to children 4 years of age at local library events and at Reach Out and Read clinics and doctors’ offices. 

Reach Out and Read prepares Colorado’s youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together. By providing age-appropriate books to low-income families at well-child visits from 6 months to 5 years of age, Reach Out and Read Colorado prepares children for school and encourages a lifelong love of reading. The following Reach Out and Read sites in Sterling will also have books available to be picked up:  Poudre Valley Medical Group – Dr. Charnecki, Salud Family Health Center and Northeast Colorado Health Department.

Haxtun Public Library holding fundraiser April 27

The Haxtun Public Library will be having a fundraising dinner on April 27^th at 5:30pm at the Haxtun Community Center.  Stephanie Blake, author of The Marble Queen, will discuss her book and will be available to sign books afterward. Tickets can be purchased at the Haxtun Library 774-6106 or by calling Vickie Freemyer at 580-2239 cost is $8.50 for adults and $4.00 for children 12 and under. Tickets must be purchased by April 26th.

Sterling Public Library to hold program on Tomb of the Unknown Soldier May 2

The Sterling Public Library will be hosting Thomas Tudor, Member of the Society of the Honor Guard Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Thursday, May 2 at 7pm in the Library Community Room.  Mr. Tudor will present a program on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.  The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was established in 1921 to represent all missing and unknown service members who made the ultimate sacrifice.  For more information on the program please call 522-2023

Sterling Public Library to celebrate Library Week April 14-20

National Library Week is April 14^th to 20^th, a time to celebrate the contributions of libraries, librarians and library workers in schools, campuses and communities nationwide.  The theme for 2013 is Communities Matter @ Your Library.

Sterling Public Library will celebrate the week in several ways.  Our community does matter at Sterling Public Library so we are kicking of the week with a Food for Fines day on Monday, April 15^th.  Anyone with a fine can bring in one nonperishable food item and get $3.00 taken off of their fines.

On Monday evening at 6:30 p.m. Curtis Mork, the Lego Guy, will provide a great program about his lego collection.  The program is good for anyone who has an interest in legos.  At the end of the program everyone will have a chance to let their creation show as they build with legos.

The library will offer an I Spy game for kids and a scavenger hunt for young adults and adults all week.  Come in and participate in the game and be entered in the drawing for Chamber Bucks.  The library will have a special display during the week of Colorado authors. 

On Wednesday, April 17^th the computer lab will be set up to demonstrate the many e-sources the library provides.  Just of a few that will be featured are Overdrive – the downloadable source for books, audios, videos and more, EBSCO – a database with all types of information helpful to kids completing school projects, someone wanting to know more about a medical condition or someone working on their car, Heritage Quest – great for genealogy work and Learning Express – the online test source.  These are just a few of the resources we will feature.  You can drop in anytime and choose the source or sources you want to learn more about.

"Lego Guy" to appear at Sterling Public Library April 15

Curtis Mork (the Lego Guy) will provide Sterling Public Library’s Marvelous Monday program on April. 15^th at 6:30 p.m.  Curtis Mork is from Platteville and loves talking with people about his legos. Mr. Mork began is lego collection in 2007 when his best friend bought him a Star Wars kit for Christmas.  Since then his collection has continued to grow.

During the program Mr. Mork will tell how the story of Lego came to be.  He will journey through Lego history to present day as he shares his fantastic lego collection with us.  Mr Mork will show some of the extravagant pieces he has built with legos.  Everyone will have a chance to build something themselves.  The program is appropriate for all ages.

Sterling Public Library's "Saturday Kids Connection" April 13

Sterling Public Library is providing our Saturday Kids Connection on Saturday, April 13th at 2:00 p.m.  The program is for kids in 2^nd through 5^th grade.  The program theme is Saturday is the moon.  We will watch a short movie about the moon and have fun with an educational activity.  We hope to see lots of kids this Saturday as we have a great time exploring science.

Sterling Public Library Quilt Show Ending Soon

Sterling Public Library’s 10^th annual quilt show will soon be taken down.  This year the library is displaying 44 beautiful quilts.  The quilt show will be up through March 31^st so if you haven’t been in to see them stop by this week. Viewers of the show may vote for their favorite quilt though March 28^th.

On March 29^th at 2:00 the library will hold a quilt reception.  During the reception people will have the opportunity to meet some of the quilters or quilt owners.  The library will also be announcing the winner of the People’s Choice at the reception.  Quilts from the 1600 Race will also be displayed March 29^th through March 31^st.

Sterling Public Library hosting 1600 Race March 9

Sterling Public Library is hosting a 1600 Race this Saturday, March 9^th at 9:15 a.m. as a part of our celebration of quilts.  At the end of the morning participants will have finished a quilt top. 

Anyone who can sew a reasonably straight seam is qualified to participate.  People may work in teams.  Each person or team will sew 1600 inches of fabric into one quilt top.  Participants need to bring their own fabric (a jelly role), sewing machine, thread, scissors, extension cord and fleece for backing.  Participants can also cut their own strips if they prefer.

Finished quilts will be donated to patients at the Walsh Cancer Center.

"Pushing the Limits" Discussion Series starts March 26 at Sterling Public Library

Late last year Sterling Public Library received a grant for the program Pushing the Limits. Sterling was one of 20 libraries across the nation to receive the grant.  This program is a four part book discussion series.  Pushing the Limits brings together books and video featuring authors, scientists and everyday people who thrive on exploring the world.

Since the beginning of time, humans have imagined and achieved ways to push the boundaries of the physical world.  Today we want to be smarter and more aware of our surroundings, pushing the limits with new advances and technology.

The Pushing the Limits program will explore many ideas through discussions.  The discussions will be on the following books:

March 26^th at 7:00 p.m - When the Killing’s Done by T.C. Boyle – Nature

April 23^rd  at 7:00 p.m. – Arctic Drift by Clive Cussler – Survival

May 30^th at 7:00 p.m – The Land of Painted Caves  by Jean Auel – Knowledge

June 25^th at 7:00 p.m. – Thunderstruck by Erik Larson – Connection

The discussions will be led by Sandy Van Dusen, Library Superintendent and Brenda Zink, NCJ Science Instructor.  Brenda has always had a passion for teaching and learning and is looking forward to being a part of the discussions.  Each discussion will include a short video by the author of the book and a human interest story.

You may attend one or all of the discussions.  Each one will explore a different area.  The videos will add a new dimension to the discussions.  Refreshments will be served at each discussion.

This national program has been developed by a team of library professionals, scientists, and filmmakers.  The organizations include Dartmouth College, the Association of Rural and Small Libraries, the Califa Group (a California based library consortium), Dawson Media Group and the Oregon State University with generous funding from the National Science Foundation.
