City of Sterling Wildcat Softball Skills Assessment April 26

On April 26, 2014 the City of Sterling Recreation Division, will host a skills assessment for all Sterling girls that are registered in the Girls Wildcat Softball Program for ages 9 through 16.

The event will take place at the City softball fields.  In case of inclement weather; the assessment will take place at Aux. Gym at NJC.

Players will be assessed on fielding, throwing, hitting and base running. Those wanting to pitch and catch will also be assessed.

Divisions are determined by girl’s age as of May 27, 2014.

The girls who will play in the 9/10 year old division should be at the South Field from 10:00 to 11:15 a.m.

The girls who will play in the 11/12 year old division should be at South Field from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

The girls who will play in the 13/14 and the 15/16 year old divisions should be at the South Field from 1:00 to 2:15 p.m.

This is a valuable opportunity for coaches to watch players in action and get familiar with the girls prior to the draft date.

The coaches will draft players on Sunday, April 27, 2014, at Sterling Recreation Center, 808 Elm St. The 9/10 year old coach’s draft will start at 1:00 p.m.  Then 11/12 year old coaches will draft at 2:00 p.m.  The 13/14 year old coach’s draft at 3:00 p.m. and the 15/16 year old coaches will draft at 5:00 p.m.

Registration being accepted for 2nd Annual Perry Mason Co-Rec Softball Tournament in Sterling

The City of Sterling Recreation Division is currently accepting registrations for the 2nd Annual Perry Mason Co-Rec. Tournament. Game will begin on Saturday morning, May 31st. The rain out date will be Sunday, June 1. Cost is $150 per team, and the deadline to enter is Wednesday, May 14. Checks must be made payable to "City of Sterling." Registration is underway for the upcoming City of Sterling, Girls Wildcat Youth Softball Program. The program will go by the participant’s age, not their grade. 

Individual registration forms will be distributed to all RE-1 Valley Schools and are also available at the Sterling Recreation Center, at Hibbits and at the Department of Parks, Library and Recreation Office in City Hall.

REGISTRATION PROCEDURE:  This year, you can either register your children using our registration forms or register online. 

1)      To register using a registration form: Forms are available at the Recreation Center, and will be provided to all RE-1 Elementary Schools, Sterling Middle School and other area schools. They are also available at Hibbits and at the Department of Parks, Library and Recreation Office in City Hall. The registration fee must accompany the registration form.

2)      To register on-line: Go to www.teamsideline.com/sterling. Simply make a Login Name & Password & follow the steps online to sign up your kiddo for youth softball! Please remember, you have NOT fully completed the online registration until the Recreation Division receives your payment. IF YOUR PAYMENT ARRIVES PAST THE CLOSING DATE OF APRIL 16^TH, YOUR CHILD WILL NOT GET IN!

FEE:  is $30 per player for all divisions and includes a team t-shirt.

GIRLS STAFF PITCH DIVISION: is for all girls 7 and 8 years old.  Players must be 7 years old by May 27^th, 2014.  The City will provide a staff member to pitch to the players.  Participants will be placed on teams by the Recreation Division.

GIRLS FASTPITCH DIVISIONS: of play are as follows:  9/10, 11/12, 13/14, & 15/16 year olds. A players division is determined by their age as of May 27^th, 2014.  Fastpitch divisions are done by a draft format for all Sterling participants.  Every player that signs up will be selected!  There will be a player skills assessment date TBD at the City Softball Complex. We want all players to participate in the skills assessment.  The draft date TBD at the Sterling Recreation Center.  Pre-season pitcher and catcher clinic dates will be announced.

St. Patrick's Day Walk/Run and Softball Tournament March 15 in Brush

The 9th annual St. Patrick's Day walk/run will be held on Saturday, March 15th in Brush. They will also be hosting a corned beef and cabbage lunch after the race, followed by a one-pitch softball tournament at the Joslin-Needham softball complex. Softball Tournament October 12 in Merino

There will be a fundraising softball tournament to benefit Merino seniors through the MEA Scholarship Fund October 12 starting at 8am at the Merino High School baseball Field.  Winner earns bragging rights and t-shirts.  The entry fee is $150 per team.  Registration is preferred by October 8.  For more information or to sign up call Nathan at 522-7424 ext. 308.

Wray Softball Team Raising Money for St. Jude's Cancer Center

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and the Wray Eagles softball team is raising money for St. Jude's Cancer Center by selling Cancer Awareness t-shirts for $20 each.  You can find their flyers in many businesses around Wray, and if you would like to contribute and/or order a shirt please contact Briar Clark at 630-7325.

NJC softball to hold fundraiser tournament

Northeastern’s Head Women’s Softball Coach  Kristine Campo spent her summer recruiting a solid set of players to Sterling and she’s looking forward to a good season. So forward, in fact, that she’s willing to put her players up against anyone who wants to bring their best “fun” game to the field.  She has put together what she hopes will become an annual tournament and fundraiser for the program.

The 1^st Annual Beat the Plainswomen co-rec slow pitch softball tournament is scheduled for September 7 and 8^th at the Sterling city fields. Registrations are being accepted now. If you have a team that can squeeze past the college players, members of your team will get a shirt that proclaims “We Beat the Plainswomen!” and you’ll certainly have some bragging rights. But, Campo doesn’t think you can do it.

Cost to enter the tournament is $225 per team and you get a four game guarantee. There are some details you’ll want to consider. Games will run 55 minutes with volunteer umpires, afterall, this is a fun and games fundraiser. Each team will need to have an  equal number of men and women or must have more women than men. You can have a maximum of 15 players on your team.  Each batter up will start with a 2-1 count. Only three homes runs will be allowed per team per game.

Money raised at this two day battle of the balls will be used by the NJC softball program to help pay for gear and travel expenses. Donations beyond the entry fee will be really appreciated as well. The City of Sterling Recreation Division is currently accepting registrations for the 1st Annual Perry Mason Adult Co-Rec softball tournament.  Games will be held Friday, July 26 through Sunday, July 28.  The entry fee is $150 per team and the registration deadline is Wednesday, July 18.  Checks must be made payable to the "City of Sterling."  Registration forms and fees may be mailed to or dropped off at the Sterling Recreation Center, 808 Elm Street, Sterling CO 80751.  Sterling Recreation Center hours are: Monday-Friday, 5:30am-9pm, Tuesday and Thursday, 7am-9pm, Saturday 9am-9pm, and Sunday 1-6pm.

There will be recreational and competitive divisions, with a 14 player cap per team.  Teams will provide umpires according to tournament schedule.

Proceeds will be used for the City of Sterling's Youth Wildcat Softball Program to update equipment.

Prizes will be given for 1st and 2nd place in each division.

Rotary Club of Sterling Softball Tournaments July 5-7

City of Sterling Fall Softball Program Accepting Registrations

The City of Sterling’s Recreation Division is currently accepting team registrations for the upcoming Fall Softball program.  The program is scheduled to begin August 13, 2012.

The program is available to Co-Rec teams as well as Men’s Slow-Pitch teams.  Co-Rec games are played on Monday evenings and the Men’s games are played on Wednesday evenings. 

The team entry fee is $250.00.  There are no player fees. Teams will play eight games over five weeks. Teams can pick up the registration information from the Recreation Center at 808 Elm Street or Pro Sports.  The due date to enter is Wednesday, August 1, 2012.

City of Sterling to honor longtime softball supporter Perry Mason July 16

On Monday, July 16^th, the City Of Sterling, Recreation Division will have an Appreciation & Retirement Evening honoring Perry Mason.  It will be held from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 at the ballpark concession stands.  The evening will celebrate Perry’s 52 years of service and dedication to softball in Sterling.

There will be a presentation at 7:00 p.m. and an open mic. for ruminations and stories.  The Ballpark Grill will graciously provide free burgers for the occasion and drinks will also be free! 

Come on out, remember the history of Sterling Softball, share a story, reminisce, and celebrate with Perry and his family!

Recruitment underway to build new team starting Fall 2011

Economic times are tough, but with a little help from its friends, Northeastern is pleased to announce that it is bringing women’s fast pitch softball back as a varsity sport starting next fall. Men’s soccer is also going to debut at the same time. Women’s softball will have its first official season again in National Junior College Athletic Association Region IX competition in the spring of 2012. The last time NJC had women’s softball was in 2003.

“Softball has potential to bring in students and help build enrollment, much like baseball does,” says Dr. Lance Bolton, president of the college. “We have a new dorm coming up that can help us accommodate these student athletes. We’ve had many requests to bring this sport back and now we’ve been blessed with a gift that is going to help make it happen.”

Bolton is referring to a softball scholarship fund which has been gifted to the college by Brett and Tina McEndaffer and their two daughters, Brit and Blair.
“It takes scholarship money to recruit players and the McEndaffers have generously stepped up to help make the return of a softball program possible,” Bolton notes. Brit and Blair were both exceptional softball players for Sterling High School and both would have loved to have played at NJC had the program been available. The twins went to Western Nebraska Community College to play and then continued on at Chadron State College to finish out their collegiate playing careers.

Coaching the returning softball program will be Brock Baseggio, an NJC alumni who is currently the manager of the NJC Book Store. Like many of the NJC employees, he will wear multiple hats starting next fall as he runs the women’s softball program in addition to his current duties. Baseggio, a self-proclaimed lover of anything involving a small ball and a bat, is a graduate of Sterling High School. He played baseball at NJC for two years and had hoped to go on to a four year university to play, but shoulder and elbow surgeries brought his college playing career to a halt. He does still play some competitive men’s slow pitch softball on an area team that travels throughout Colorado and has plans to compete in Las Vegas and New York tournaments next year. Baseggio has coached some baseball in the past and feels very competent at his ability to coach fast pitch softball. “It’s the same sport for the most part,” he notes, adding “next year Brit McEndaffer has agreed to come on board as a volunteer-assistant and I know that she really knows the game so she will be a huge help.”

Baseggio, who worked for two years in the admissions office as a recruiter, is in a great spot to begin his recruitment for softball. “I was a road warrior for NJC for two years, out talking to students and counselors and coaches all over the state,” he says. “In many of the schools out there, the high school counselor might also be a coach of one or more sports, that’s just how it works. They wear multiple hats, too. I have made many contacts at schools all over Colorado and so I will be able to call back now and get connected with coaches and players.”

Baseggio says he plans to get 24 letters of intent signed going into the fall semester of 2011 and will probably end up with 25-30 players on an active roster.
What kind of players will he be recruiting? “ Well, NJC’s approach has always been that we look for student-athletes, not athlete-students,” he said. “I will follow that philosophy as I want players who want to excel in the classroom as well as on the field.” Baseggio said he is already working his high school contacts hard to make sure he is getting the word out that softball is returning to NJC. The college had the option of restarting the program as a club sport, but Baseggio decided not to do that, but to go right into varsity play instead. “I’ve been doing some scouting out and around at some of the high school games and we have some great players right here in this area. I will be working to recruit some of them and of course I know there will be interest from other players from other areas once they know we have brought the sport back.”
