City of Sterling Holiday Trash Schedule

The City of Sterling will observe Wednesday, December 25 for the Christmas holiday, and Wednesday, January 1 for the New Year's holiday. Because of these holidays, there will be no trash collected these days. For both weeks, Wednesday's route (December 25 and January 1) will be collected on Thursday (December 26 and January 2) along with Thursday's regular route. The rest of the week will be normal pick-up routes.

8th Annual Holiday Craft Show December 14 in Wiggins

The 8th Annual Holiday Craft Show will be held Saturday, December 14 from 10am-3pm at the Wiggins Elementary School Gym.  Shop for Christmas, have chili for lunch, and enjoy the activities.

Holiday Remembrance Program December 5 in Wray

A Holiday Remembrance Program will be held Thursday, December 5th at 6pm at Spellman-Schmidt Funeral Home (427 Adams Street - Wray). The Holiday season presents a new series of challenges after the loss of a loved one. The special days traditionally celebrated during the holiday season may intensify your grief as your family gathers together to celebrate in new or different ways. The program offers a spiritual message and practical advice for coping with grief this special time of the year with a candle lighting and ornament ceremony in memory of loved ones. Families have the opportunity to gather with others who have experiences a loss, connect for support and provide social interaction in a casual manner, with music and refreshments. Everyone is invited.

City of Fort Morgan Holiday Hours

The Fort Morgan Library & Museum and the City’s Recreation Center will have shortened hours of operation at certain times during the upcoming holiday season.

Both facilities as well as all other City offices will be closed on the holidays of Thanksgiving (Nov. 28-29), Christmas Day (Dec. 25) and New Year’s Day (Jan. 1).

In addition, the library/museum and rec center will have shortened hours on the days preceding these holidays. On the day before Thanksgiving (Nov. 27), Christmas Eve (Dec. 24) and New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31), the hours of operation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the library/museum, and 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the recreation center.

Because of the closure of city offices on Thanksgiving and the following day, the city Sanitation Department will only be picking up residential trash once during the Thanksgiving week. Any trash accumulated during the closure will be picked up the following week.

Kid's Holiday Saturday November 23 in Holyoke

Kid's Holiday Saturday, November 23rd from 1-4pm at the Peerless Center in Holyoke. Decorate a Gingerbread House, see the movie -- "The Santa Clause 2" (Rated G) and enjoy a Dino Tray. All this for $18 per child - 1st Grade and older. If younger than 1st Grade an adult must be present throughout the day. You must pre-pay. The event is open to the first 60 that pre-pay to the Holyoke Chamber (Located in the Peerless Theater or Mail to Holyoke Chamber - P.O. Box 134). All houses will be on display in Sullivan's Applicance & Air window through December 13th. This event is brought to you by the Holyoke Chamber, in conjunction with CSU Extension.

Bazaar and Luncheon November 9 at First Christian Church in Sterling

First Christian Church in Sterling, 12915 County Road 37 in Sterling, will be holding a bazaar and luncheon Saturday, November 9 from 9am-1pm.  The bazaar will have grebbel, cabbage pockets, homemade noodles, crafts and holiday items, baked goods, used book sale, and a white elephant table.  The luncheon begins at 11:15am and will have chili and chicken noodle soup served with homemade pie.  Cost for lunch is $6.50 for adults and $4 for those 12 and under.

                Sterling is the place to be this holiday season.

                That’s the message of the Logan County Marketing Committee which is gearing up for a sparkling celebration this year. Members are asking all businesses to join the committee’s efforts to make Sterling shine for the holidays.

                Every business in Logan County is eligible to enter a business lighting contest which will award chamber bucks prizes for first, second and third place. Participating businesses are encouraged to use clear (white) lights to decorate their business interior, exterior and/or landscaping to follow the theme, “Let’s Make it Clear – Sterling Sparkles!”

                The business lighting contest ties into an array of events and activities planned for the upcoming holiday season which coincides with the “Light the Lights” fundraising effort to purchase additional lights for the Logan County Courthouse. Donations may be made at the Sterling Federal Credit Union for the “Light the Lights” Fund.

                A special “Light the Night” festivity takes place on Fri., Nov. 29 – also known as Black Friday – which is the official kick-off for holiday shopping. Along with entertainment, a chili-cook off and other fun activities, the evening will be lit up as the new lights at the Courthouse are turned on in a special lighting ceremony.

                Watch for more details on other sparkling ideas, including a new Sterling-based mystery book  titled “Sleighed at the Logan County Courthouse” written by several local authors, a special “Light the Lights” ornament, and watch for Sparkles the Snowman at local businesses. Calendars should also be marked for the Sterling Sparkles Parade of Lights on Thurs., Dec. 5.

Thanksgiving Schedule for Sterling Department of Parks, Library, and Recreation

Operating hours for the Recreation Office, Recreation Center, Sterling Public Library, Overland Trail Museum, and the Riverside Cemetery Office will be modified for the Thanksgiving holiday.

• Wednesday, November 21 - Library and Recreation Center close at 5pm.  Pool closes at 4pm.
• Thursday, November 22 - Thanksgiving Day - all facilities closed
• Friday, November 23 - Recreation Center open regular hours.  No classes held.  All other facilities closed
• Saturday, November 24 - Overland Trail Museum, Sterling Public Library, and Recreation Center open regular hours.

Ladies Lunch Out event marks start of season

The holiday season is upon us. As we turn the calendar from October to November, the end of year rush officially begins. With tough economic times here as well, families may be looking for activities to do that are more affordable, if not wholesome. For some families, gift giving may take a back seat to simply spending quality time together. Adding the experience of learning and the gift of knowledge to any family outing only makes it better. One way to do this is to include a visit to the ever changing Overland Trail Museum to your holiday activities.  The High Plains Educational Center at the Museum has some great, inexpensive holiday activities planned.

November starts out with the Overland Trail Museum cooperating with Northeastern Junior College and the Logan County Chamber of Commerce to host the monthly Ladies Lunch Out  event on November 8. The museum staff will reenact persons from Logan County who have shaped our heritage and museum curator, Kay Rich will discuss, “Everyone Has a Story”. The admission to the museum for the luncheon is free and you will have an excellent time browsing the ever changing Overland Trail Museum. The luncheon and presentation are $10 and you can make reservations by calling NJC at 521-6900 by Tuesday, November 6.

During  “A Child’s Christmas on the Prairie”,  families will enjoy an afternoon of old-fashioned Christmas activities including cookie decorating, Christmas caroling in the country church, a Christmas story in the O’Connell house, a visit with Santa by the fireplace and ornament making.  No reservations required for this event, just show up for  “A Child’s Christmas on the Prairie” on Saturday, December 1, from 1-3 p.m. 

 The Annual Christmas on the Prairie open house will be held December 18, 19 & 20 from 5-7 p.m.  Participants may take a stroll through the beautifully decorated courtyard and village buildings at the Museum, taste a roasted chestnut and enjoy cookies and hot cider in the High Plains Education Center. This event is always free to the public.
