A Winter Break Youth Basketball Camp will be held on the following dates in December: December 26th, 27th, 30th and 31st at Buchanan Middle School in Wray. Girls and boys grades K-3 will be from 9-10:30am, while girls and boys grades 4-8 will start at 11am. The fee is $10 per participant (pre-registration is recommended; can also register the first day of the event at the site). This camp includes basketball fundamentals stressed drills, knock out, three point, free throw, hot shot competitions, scrimmages, camp leagues and other gym activities (dodge ball, kick ball etc.). The October 24 deadline for the Blue Horizons Poetry Writing Contest for Morgan County Grades 7 through 12 students is rapidly approaching. Wray Youth Fall Sports registration August 21

The Wray Youth Fall Sports Program registration night will be Wednesday August 21st. The event will take place at Wray City Hall from 5:30-8pm. Registration will be for Flag Football (grades K-3rd), Youth Volleyball (grades 3rd-6th), Lil Spikers (grades 1 and 2) and Gymnastics (ages 3-12). Platte Valley Soccer Club Accepting Fall 2013 Registration
Platte Valley Soccer Club is now accepting Fall 2013 registration. Registration forms are available at the Sterling Recreation Center, Pro Sports, Hibbet Sports, Sonnenberg Insurance Agency all in Sterling, or at http://www.sterlingsoccerassociation.com/. City of Sterling Accepting Registrations for Girls Youth Volleyball Program
Registration is underway for the upcoming City of Sterling, Girls Youth Volleyball Program. The program is available to girls in the 2nd through 6th grade. Players must play in their grade division.
Cost is $30 per player and the deadline to enter is August 14.
Registration forms and fees may be mailed to, or dropped off at the Sterling Recreation Center, 808 Elm Street, Sterling CO 80751. Sterling Recreation Center hours are: Monday-Friday 5:30am-9pm; Saturday 9am-9pm; Sunday 1-6pm.
There will be 6 games for all grade divisions. Practices cannot begin until the week of August 26. Games are played on Saturday at Sterling Middle School and Northeastern Junior College starting September 21.
C.A.R.A. rules with some modifications will govern play. Teams will practice once a week after school or in the early evening at the elementary and middle schools in Sterling. Volunteer coaches are needed to conduct this program.
Individual registration forms are available at the Sterling Recreation Center and at Pro Sports in Sterling.

Sterling Recreation Division to host Denver Nuggets Skills Challenge Dec 22

The City of Sterling Recreation Division will host the Denver Nuggets Basketball Skills Challenge on Saturday, December 22. The competition is free for all participants. This is a chance for young basketball enthusiasts to exhibit their skills. It has separate boys and girls divisions and is open to youth ages 7 through 14. The Challenge will be held at the Sterling High School in Wally Post Gym and will start at 10am sharp. Registration begins at 9:30am. Participants must compete during the scheduled time of the competition. Late participants will not be allowed to compete.

Sterling Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot January 5

The Sterling Elks Lodge has set the date for the 41st annual "Hoop Shoot" contest. The event will be held Saturday, January 5, 2013 in the auxiliary gym in the Bank of Colorado Events Center, on the campus of Northeastern Junior College.
The contest is free and open to all young boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 13. Sign-up begins at 8am, with the contest to begin at 9am. The winners of each age group at the local contest will compete in the District Finals, also to be held at NJC on January 19, 2013.

NJC to host youth basketball tournament Dec. 15-16
Northeastern Junior College is
announcing the dates for its 2012 Youth Basketball Tournaments at the Bank of
Colorado Event Center in Sterling, CO. This year’s popular tournament returns on
the weekend of December 15-16. The tournament is for boys and girls teams grades
fourth through eighth.
Each team in the tournament is
guaranteed two pool play games and one single elimination game. The cost to
enter the tournament is $180.00 per team. Deadline for entry is Friday, December
7th. The tournament will be limited to 24 total girls teams and 24
total boys teams so early registration is always encouraged. For a complete set

City of Sterling Accepting Registrations For Youth Basketball Program
Registration is underway for the upcoming City of Sterling, 2012-2013 Youth Basketball Program. The program is available to girls and boys (girls and boys will participate in separate divisions) currently in the 2nd through 6th grades. Players from Sterling will be placed on teams by the Recreation Superintendent, accordingly. Please do not request specific teams or coaches. Beginning this year, players must play in their grade division and they may not play up a division.
Individual registration forms are available at the Recreation Center, 808 Elm Street, all RE-1 Elementary Schools, Sterling Middle School and other area schools. They are also available at Pro Sports and upstairs at the Department of Parks, Library and Recreation Office in City Hall.
Fee: $25 per player
This year, uniform company ALSCO has generously donated t-shirts for each player, reducing the original $30 fee by $5 per player.
Checks must be made payable to "City of Sterling"
The registration fee must accompany the registration form. The fee includes a team t-shirt, which is to be worn for games during the season, approximately ten practices, and six games. Participants must provide their own gym shoes and shorts.
Deadline to enter is Thursday, November 1.

Young Denver Bronco fans will have the opportunity to exhibit their football skills when the City of Sterling Recreation Division hosts the NFL Pepsi Punt, Pass & Kick Competition on Saturday, September 15, 2012.
The competition is free and open to boys and girls ages 8-15. (Age classification is as of December 31, 2012.) It will be at 10:00 a.m., on the Tiger Field, at the Sterling High School. Individuals can pick up a registration form from Pro Sports or the Sterling Recreation Center or you can register at 9:30 a.m., at Tiger Field, the day of the competition.
NFL Pepsi Punt, Pass & Kick is a football competition that allows youngsters to showcase their talents in punting, passing, and placekicking with scores based on distance and accuracy.
No football shoes/cleats/turf shoes are allowed. Only gym shoes (soft sole) will be permitted.
The top finishers from each of the four age groups at the Sterling competition will advance to a Sectional competition. Winners at the Sectional competition will have their scores compared with other sectional champions throughout Colorado; the top five scorers in each age group will advance to the Denver Broncos Team Championship.
Broncos Team Champions will have their scores compared to other Team Champions from around the NFL, with the top four scorers in each age group advancing to the National Finals at the AFC Playoff Game.

Boys & Girls Club Exploratory Meeting to be held in Sterling March 30

The Hope For Youth Committee invites the public to attend a meeting with Mike Coffman, regional director for the Boys & Girls Club, at 6pm Friday, March 30, at Sterling Public Library.
Coffman will be giving a presentation on the requirements for starting up a Boys & Girls Club in the Sterling area.
The mission of the Boys & Girls Club Movement is to "enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens."
The Southwest Region of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, which encompasses Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming, includes 232 Boys & Girls Club organizations, with 676 clubs/service locations. As of December 31, 2010, the region served 631,140 youth.
The club is designed to guide youth who are at risk or have already developed "unacceptable habits and attitudes," as well as "boys and girls of good character," according to a pamphlet about the club. Membership dues are kept low to ensure that all can afford to belong. The club lists five key elements of the program that assure positive youth development:
1. A safe, positive environment
2. Fun
3. Supportive relationships
4. Opportunities and expectations
5. Recognition
Those elements are combined with targeted programs in three areas: academic success, good character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles.
Boys Clubs of America, now Boys & Girls Clubs of America, was organized and incorporated in 1906 by a group of 653 existing clubs that believed a national organization could serve to help establish new clubs and provide assistance to existing clubs. Each local Boys & Girls Club is autonomous, and responsible for its own operations and funding.
One of the steps to starting a Boys & Girls Club is conducting a community readiness assessment, which can determine whether the needs of youth in the community are being met, as well as help identify resources available to support the club.
